Cow Calf Pairs. Fair Pasture Rate??????
« on: June 04, 2013, 10:20:57 PM »
I have about 30-35 acres of fields that used to be alalfa, now grass hay. I had a guy wanting to put some cow/calf pairs out.(20 pairs a bull and a few hefers w/no calves) Just not sure of what the going rate or a fair price is. I know beef cattle prices are skyrocketing, (well i was told). Just want to know before i settle on a price, It is fenced with some areas needing a little repair. Has a pond, grows good thick grass kinda sub irragated. Any thoughts?? I quit leasing it out after last time i got burned so kinda out of the loop of what is good or fair.

I have had that many there for 3-4 months a few years ago. It is thick tall grass. It also may be larger, more like 40 acres. 3 fenced areas so they can be rotated.

Why not make some hay and sell it?

I dont have my own equipment, I have had it done last couple years and get my 1/3 of the hay. Just had this guy ask to put his cow/calf pairs out, and was wanting to get a better idea of the rates, had heard beef prices were going up and feed/pasture should to.

Yeah, $18 to $20 is pretty standard over here as well depending on availability of water and quality of pasture.

$18 bucks is a pretty good number provided there's water and fence on it.  Being dry cows(no calves) maybe less.  $15-18

I ended up going with 15 a pair. I had heard pasture was going for more than that but my fence needed work and was letting him do all the fence repair so....
