Anyone in Thurston County area have a hereford bull?
« on: June 05, 2013, 11:10:25 AM »
My cow just calved last night and I'd like to get her bred back in 45 to 60 days.  Anyone semi-close by have a bull that I could bring her to?

AI might be cheaper with only one cow.  If you have a place to lock her up when she is inheat that would be the way to go.

That's the issue.  I don't have anywhere that is convenient to control her for AI.

Black Hog: where are the hereford bulls located?  Any idea what it would cost to drop her off for a month or two?

Not far from my place is the Rutledge farm (just barely south of Littlerock).  He has quite a few head of cattle.  Maybe you could stop and ask him if he would be up for it?  :dunno:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Check with the Petersons out of Tenino.  They used to have a nice Hereford bull.

I would prefer not to.  I don't know how it would be on fences and I don't know how easy it would load.  I don't have a loading set up.

You'd be definitely better off AI'ing her.  You could improvise a way to hold her for AI'ing.  Would be cheaper then boarding her while she is being bred...

I may do that depending on what people want to board her.

Heat detection is critical with AI.   Do you have other animals, if not find a bull?

I know (work) with Phil Rutledge and can see if he has a bull for hire.  I'll talk to him on Monday if you want.
I am starting my hereford herd back up within the next couple of weeks.  I'll keep an ear out for other bull options.  I think there is a guy in Roy who has a bull for rent for $90.

I would appreciate the info Polar.  I have some buddies that can probably hook me up, but I thought I'd review the options.
