Great day scouting
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:27:06 AM »
Headed up to one of my spots last night. On the (Westside) Up until this point I have only seen 1 buck, 3 does and 4 Bulls in this spot. But there is just way to much sign...So I brought my Jetboil, a Mountainhouse and a Beer, figured Id set up in a spot with a good vantage point and have dinner and stay till dark. Hiked in 2 miles ( I usually hike in 4 or 5 but was feeling lazy) climbed up to a little cleared high spot with a 180 degree view of reprod and clearcuts and plenty of timber lines. Set up dinner on a stump, ate and decided to move just a little higher up. As I walked back I jumped a buck that had been watching me eat dinner about 30 yards behind me!!He had already forked so pretty good buck. Set up to glass again, its about 8:30pm now glassing, glassing nothing...Then I hear something coming out of the 15 year old reprod behind me I turn around and get behind the stump, noticed some movement to my left at about 60 yards, its another forked buck! He was a little bigger than the other, now hes looking at me and blowing, thought I was busted till the noise behind me which was a doe walks out about 30 yards from me and shes blowing too, they keep blowing back and forth for 5 min then slowly start to walk into the clearcut. As the buck walks in I notice him step down into a hole and immediately a another HUGE buck stands up! He was already a 3x3 with velvet this early!! Soon after another doe walks out... So I watch them interact and eat and start to get bored and  start glassing again. I then spot another small buck feeding in some reprod on another hillside. At this point I cant believe how many deer and BUCKS I'm seeing!! So i decide to focus on the reprod on the left now and let the deer feeding on my right be. I notice another 4 deer walking together down below me (not sure if they were bucks or does was kinda getting dark) I then see elk start pouring out from the timberline to my left at about 150 yards into the reprod! I counted 8 but I'm sure there were more.I assume they were Cows  because there were some smaller ones mixed in. I couldn't believe how much action I saw!! It was my best day scouting by far!! I cant wait till September!!

Dude that sounds like one hell of a day! Great job sticking it out! If you ever need some one to hang with while scouting, or need help packing out, let me know, I live in the area!

What you need to do is figure out which direction they are coming from, (sounds like they were coming and going from all directions) locate the the game trails that are used most frequently, set up a game camera, possibly hike in a salt lick to keep them around, bring out apples as they begin to ripen into the late summer, and keep scouting them so you can figure out there pattern!

All the bucks came out of the same spot and its the same trail I saw another nice buck come from back in January. I'll go back in a couple weeks and follow that trail to see if there's a tree to hang a stand on.
