Memorial Day Weekend Bird
« on: June 12, 2013, 05:17:11 PM »
I took my son out for his first overnight trip away from momma. After being kept up all night by the idiots shooting guns :bash: into the wee hours we went to a different area the next morning. He had done real well keeping quiet the day before and was getting pretty good on the box call. I had forgotten to give him the talk about slamming the truck door. It ended up being a blessing in disguise though. His door slam triggered some dogs to bark on the private land about 400 yards away and in turn prompted a tom to gobble at the dogs. After moving up the road behind a gate we were able to call this bird into range after about an hour of coaxing. He had 3 hens with him which is why he took so long. He got greedy and it cost him his life. It turned out to be a great couple days that neither of us will soon forget. And I'll never let my wife know it but he didn't ask for her once ;)

Those are some great pics and great memories.  Always a good time getting a youngster on a bird!  Congrats

The car door slam is a rarely used but highly effective locater call too.  Used it on several occassions myself  :chuckle:

Congratulations to you and your boy.  Those are some great photos!  I hope to get a similar opportunity with my eldest daughter someday.
I am trying to connect with, and introduce my family to, the American hunting and fishing heritage to which I was never introduced.
