A few triploids!!!
«
on:

I have some friends and family that fish the pens over at Rufus Woods all the time. Made my first trip on Saturday. My grandpa and I had a blast. Only a two fish limit but you can shake off the 3-5 pounders at the boat abd keep the bigger ones. I kept two that were about 7-8 pounds and so did gramps. We saw some that were probably 15+ but not interested in our tackle.
If anyone has pictures of some big ones from over there, I'd like to see.

That is fun fishing over there, and you can do just as well from the bank. Here's a couple I got on my first trip over there (I just kept the first two I got).

I walleye fish there quite a bit in the fall and winter months and have seen some fish (triploids) up to 20 lbs at the launch. Only problem is in the winter everyone and their brother fish that spot for triploids.

Awesome looking fish. My brother used to go there all of the time. I haven't fished it much, but it sure is fun with the big fish. What kind of gear do you guys use? I know many use the powerbait, but I think jigging was where I had the most luck. I never could figure out how to effectively fly fish for them. Needed to tie a dogfood fly I guess.

they'll eat flies
wooly buggers knock em dead.
you just have to put the fly in front of them. i can't say i caught them in rufus woods, but a lot of the big fish from lenice and nunally are triploids. trolling with downriggers, wedding rings, fenders, pop gear all that kind of stuff is popular on rufus woods. i think the guys that catch the truly huge fish like 15-20 lb'ers are catching them off of downriggers. maybe i'm wrong.

Trouble is with the current and the presentation and dealing with the nets. I suppose if you weighted it enough you could deaddrift it just like I do with jigs.

What kind of gear do you guys use?
From the bank, I setup with a sliding weight of some sort (I just use two egg sinkers to equal about an 1.5oz...more or less depending on current), then I run a bead on the line and then tie to a barrel swivel. Then I use about a 4' leader (I do much better when I use fluorocarbon leader), and a #6 or #4 baitholder hook. For bait, I use three Garlic flavored marshmallows (you can experiment with the flavor here...sometimes using just plain white kraft mini-mallows) and then I also throw a chunk of nightcrawler on there and pump him full of air with the worm blower. You want to slide the mallows up the leader, and then once your worm is on, slide them back down on top of it. Cast it out, and wait for the fish.

Rufus Woods is a trout fisherman's dream! Catching 5-20 pound football shaped trout? I think I could do that for a living, LOL.

You said they were even bigger. Still waiting for you to send me the pic of the 30 incher you caught on your trail cam!!
