Anyone else who didn't draw in WA thinking of picking up a surplus combo from MT? I'm thinking real hard.

Im probably going to pick up a couple surplus doe tags to fill the freezer and do some scouting. My hunting group is planning a bucks and bulls trip for next season.

Exactly. I need to get over and get the lay of the land anyway, so might as well. Wolf hunt would be cool too since they dropped NR tags to $50

I bought a Deer Tag. Does anyone know if they still have Elk tags left, and if so can you upgrade to the combo for the price difference rather than having to pay the full price of the Elk Tag. Also I did not see Surplus doe tags on the website. Any idea of price??

Surplus antlerless tags go on sale August 5th. The only doe tags you can buy right now are the single region whitetail tags which are otc.

I called a couple weeks ago to ask MT Fish & Game this question and was told the only way is to return the deer tag for an 80% refund and buy the big game combo

I told myself that I am gonna kill a branch bull for Aaron this year so since I didn't draw in Wa I bought a OTC tag for the unit I drew for deer in Colorado.  However the more I think about it, Aaron wasn't a rifle hunter and like me he loved to call elk so now I am thinking of a MT elk archery hunt.  Only state that will work with my vacation time (Sept. 28- Oct 6th). Still undecided though as I have no clue where to go for elk in that state, mule deer yes, elk no.  Might just stay home and find some poor sap with a muzzy permit to drag around for a week. Gotta love the fact that you can now use Montana as a fall back plan if other states fall through. -Karl

Appreciate the offer sir but this one is a little too personal to share.  I think I got it figured out.  Now to get my shoulder back into "bow bending" shape.  Blew it out this spring and its still a little iffy.  Hope you drop the hammer on a brute this fall  -Karl

Last year I was able to get deer tags after season had started, I expect the same this year.

I think deer combos will sell out this year.  Last year deer combos didn't go on sale until August.  And there are less deer combos for sale this year and they went on sale in May.

Does any one know if its possible to buy a second out of state deer tag for montana if you fill your first one. When I have hunted Idaho out of state you paid the out of state fee for the first one and if there were more available you could go back into town and buy one for the same price as the resident tag.

We bought 4 deer tags this morning. Headed east in November to chase some deer with my dad and good buddy with his dad should be a great trip. There were only 78 left as of this afternoon.

All the talk about MT being a fall back state was beginning to sound pretty good til you posted the prices of the tags and that puts it out of my bucket list of possible adventures, Especially since the  blood test every 3 months is running right at $900.00 and the insurance won't cover them.

Montana is over priced. I'm surprised they sold out on the Deer combos, but it was the lowest price option available. There are still over 3000 Big Game and Elk combos remaining. That's almost $3M in lost revenue not counting the $$ hunters spend while in state. I hope they get the picture.
