Youth Skookumchuk Tag
« on: June 19, 2013, 06:13:57 PM »
Alright here we go.

My son drew a his first Youth Skookumchuck tag 1549 antlerless and it starts the 5th of Oct - Oct 31st. I am now hearing that that is all Weyerhauser land and that you need a permit of limited entry to get in there. Anyone have info on this and how to obtain one or just info in general. I am a East side elk hunter so this Youth deer thing is new to me.

Any info appreciated

Brian

Even without going into Vail you should have no issue getting the boy a doe in that unit.

Vail takes up a good chunk of Skookumchuck but there is still some places you can find and if you want to knock on doors there is always private land.  Good luck to your son I've tagged out every time I've drawn it, does are plentiful.
Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3

Where would he go if not on Weyerhaeuser? I know of some state land but it's hard to access. I guess go down towards Morton and hunt the south or east side of the unit on the National Forest. But I don't believe there's been much logging there for years. I think Weyerhaeuser is your best bet. If it was my kid I'd probably just spend the $150, then I could hunt too.

Go to Morton and head West on 508, about 5 miles outta town on the right is the NF73 rd. Go to the Y and stay left, over the river, at the next Y stay right and cross the river again. The second road on your left is the 7303. You can only drive it for a 1/4 mile or so then hoof it. Tons of deer in there. I will warn you though, its steep. If you look at it on a map, its checker board units of NF and state. If you go on Google Earth and follow my directions it will make total sense. Lots of area up there. PM me if you like.

In an earlier thread, someone mentioned that the plan for the Vail tree farm (this year only) was to allow the youth permit holders in free without a pass. Also mentioned on another active thread today.

Don't know if its true.
If it is, that's where you want to be for sure (especially the week before general opens.
I'd check into it before doing anything else.

If you can get into Vail without buying the pass then its a no brainer but if you have to buy the pass save the $150 (unless you plan to hunt there more) and hunt between elbe and morton or like said before off 508.

Try this number 1-866-636-6531.....great tag too.  My son had that tag a couple years ago and seen TONS of deer and not another hunter with being able to get in a week early.  And I did hear what someone else said in this thread about the letting the youth tag holders go in for free this year.  But I am not 100% sure.

Yep, steep mofo in there but finding a doe shouldn't be too difficult. That time of year snow shouldnt be an issue, I have hunted this area the last few years during the late muzzy season and sometimes snow makes it a little dicey getting to the top but always see deer, nice bucks also but always out of muzzy range. Good luck, should be a fun time for you & your son.
Also you can access this unit by Mineral, also very steep but have seen plenty of deer up in that area.  :twocents:
