I catch your drift sfrenger. However good luck, id imagine there arent more than 3 or 4 bucks a year that come out of that hunt that hit an honest 170. And some years none come out that hit the 185 mark. Hold out for what youve dreamed about and be satisfied at the end of the hunt.

Don't pass one up that you wouldn't shoot on the last day. :twocents:

Unless you already have a room full of 170+ bucks

What to shoot and what to mount is always a tough call, I shot this one in 2009 on opening day also in an adjacent unit and even though he was about 10" smaller than the Entiat buck I still mounted him, again with a bow this one was also a trophy to me.  If it had the mass of the 02 buck it would have scored much better.  But for me it is not so much about the score as the "wow that is big enough" factor.  Of course at 159" and 147" both of these make the book, it only takes 145" in archery to make the book.  Since then I have shot a couple in the 120"-130" range that I just did Euro mounts of.

Rainier, those are both stud bucks for either of those units, especially with a bow. And your 159" buck was my point when I said only 3 or 4 bucks come out of those units that hit an "honest" 170. Most guys would see your bucks and say it was 180, and thats where all of these rumors of 180 bucks running around up there. No disrepect to your buck either, its a pig!

None taken, you are right on the money, when they see them on the wall at my house that is what they say, "man is that 170 or 180".  Honestly I would say that too if I didn't get to look at them all year long and know what a 160" deer is.

The difference in those two deer is 12" and that gets tough to tell at that size.  You are talking about 1" longer on each of the 8 points and a little bit more mass.  Really tough to judge when in the field shooting your first big deer.  Most think the 120 and 130 deer I have shot are 140-150", it is an easy mistake if you don't get to actually put a tape on them.  I am certainly no expert on field judging but having a couple on the wall definately helps.

HuntinPhool, BigTine, deerslayer, and the rest of the haters  :bash:
I wouldn't consider a tag burned unless I got to look at many bucks and take my pick or at least get some good hard hunting in. However, it sounds like not only do I need to worry about killing a record book buck, but now I have to worry about the indians killing all of them last year. What's the deal? This hunt is starting to sound like a real buzzkill. Do the indians come down every year and slaughter the deer out of this unit? Sometimes I wonder about this state. Must be trying to milk every last dollar out of its citizens. Thanks everyone I'll post any pics from the scouting trip or hunt.

Haters? No idea where you got that idea. :dunno:

If the indians hunting the Entiat is news to you, then you didn't do your homework before applying for that tag. :twocents:

Hater? I was just letting you know that Rainiers buck is a stud for that unit, and no easy task. Just dont want you to be disappointed when you dont even lay eyes on a true 180 buck.
Hunt hard, bring chains, bring good glass and use it to no end, pray for weather, have a little luck, and have an amazing hunt! Thats all there is to that hunt. It will be enjoyable no matter what.

I spend more time in that unit than probably anybody and the ratio is 300 bucks for a 180, 500 bucks for a 190 and 1000+ for a 200.  Good luck with your hunt and hold your expectations high and eat that tag, sounds good to me, more sheds for me to find. With luck on your side and a 80mm spotting scope overlooking a 5 mile radius, I think you can get r dun.

Holding out for a quality buck is a tougher task than many understand until they do it, including myself.  I drew the 250 quality tag last year and ended up eating it.  Had many easy opportunities for bucks early on but all where less than my initial goal...some bucks you will want back others not so much.  I felt disappointed when I drove home the last day for not bringing at least a spike home.  Any meat is good meat at my house!   It should be called "humble soup" instead of "tag soup".  Might think about that sfrenger???
