Seen some pics of some great bucks taken from this unit. Sounds like I better be prayin' for some snow in the high country. Thanks for everyone's input and pics. It's much appreciated. I'll post pics if I kill my wall hanger.

Snow always helps and makes seeing them easier, but don't get discouraged if the snow is scarce keep at it, they are there.

When I shot mine during the old archery season there was only about 3" of snow on the higher peaks.  It was tough to spot the bucks but with good glass you can find them.

Good luck and enjoy the hunt, I hope you find the one that "wows" you.

Here it is, shot in 02 late november when it was still a general archery season, no special tag required, very little snow.  Grossed 163 4/8" netted 159 4/8".

Congrats on the draw, I was drawn in 06 with two of my buddies, it was a great hunt, lots to see, suggest if you don't have a good spotting scope you need to get one.   We spot and stock hunt, and this is a great area for that, be sure to spend lots of time glassing, we seen other hunters that were just driving around, passing up deer all over because they didn't get out of the truck.  We seen hundreds of deer every day, 20 + bucks and 6 to 7 what we would normally call shooter buck that we passed every day, we didn't get the snow to push the migrators down, but we all shot nice bucks.  Good luck on a great hunt.

By all means BigDaddy, post the pics if you have them. I need to edit my post and take out that part about posting pics only of bucks being taken during my rifle hunt. I'm not going to burn my tag until the last day. I will hunt until I find one that I would be proud of. That buck of raineirs is a nice looking buck, but that would be a last day of the hunt buck for me.

I hope it works out for you, that was an opening day buck for me, just couldn't pass him up.  Hunted the rest of the season with a buddy and didn't get too much more snow, that was the biggest deer we saw.  It is a real guessing game on waiting.  It is your finger on the trigger in the end and hopefully you connect on one you are happy with.

That is not what most consider to be "burning your tag" and to notch your tag with any animal should be considered a honor, regardless the score. :twocents:

Yup, I'm looking for a "ONCE IN A LIFETIME" buck. This hunt is only going to get harder to draw. I doubt I will ever even waste a special permit application trying to draw this area again. Thanks for posting the buck. I would definitely get that mounted if I shoot one similar.

Huntin, don't get me wrong, that's a great buck, but it's not a record book buck. Let me put it into perspective for you. 25 permits and 4100 applicants. The liklihood of me ever EVER getting an opportunity like this again is next to none. If I shot that buck on day one and every buck I saw after that was bigger, then I couldn't live with myself. However, if I hunt my arse off for the next 19 days and don't kill a deer, then I would be satisfied. You catch my drift now?

I catch your drift sfrenger. However good luck, id imagine there arent more than 3 or 4 bucks a year that come out of that hunt that hit an honest 170. And some years none come out that hit the 185 mark. Hold out for what youve dreamed about and be satisfied at the end of the hunt.

Just sayin, to most "burning your tag" means going home empty handed, not notching it with a buck you consider to be a "last day" buck.
