Keep in mind that scouting this time of year won't turn up many animals except whatever local deer are hanging around. If the snow flies and when the rut gets going around the first of November it will be a different world over there. Snow/migration/rut = deer. Good idea to get a lay of the land and familiar with the road system this summer though. Stop in at Coopers Store in Ardenvoir and take a look at their buck board from over the years. Have a lot of pictures of deer. Some regular season and some late. Definitely should be excited to have this tag, you'll have a blast even if you don't see a "monster" buck. Once your hunt starts give yourself a few days to look over the deer and get a feel for what grade of bucks you're seeing everyday. Once you know that, it will be easy to tell one that stands out from the crowd. Have a blast!

Well, this isn't the buck i've been after, but he's definitely related to him. This is one of his off-spring for sure. Will be interesting to see how he turns out, but his rack is kinda spindly right now. Looks like i'll be going after a big muley afterall.

So how'd the hunt go?

I have never been soo disappointed in my life. 10 years worth of preference points, 1 of 25 permits and 4200 applicants later, the number 1 rifle permit hunt in the state for migratory mule deer during the rut and this is all I have to show for it. I saw 250 bucks and 600 does in 19 days of hard hunting, but not a single mule deer buck worth putting on the wall. I popped a tire, busted my muffler off, tore off a molding, smashed my rear bumper into my truck bed, and almost slid off the side of a cliff about 2 dozen times. I have blisters where nobody should have blisters. I put 2500 miles on my truck in 2 weeks. I spent thousands of dollars in Entiat for this so-called "HUNT OF A LIFETIME" and all I have to show for it is a 3 point buck that I could have shot during the general season. The only reason this one died is because it was conveniently located next to the road.

I am new to hunting but I wouldn't be ashamed to show that deer off.  Especially after how hard it sounds like you hunted.  Can't do anything but try and you did just that.  May not be what you were hoping for but you didn't have to eat the tag and you have some meat in the freezer.  To top it off... you seen more bucks in two weeks than I have seen deer in my life haha.  Maybe next year you only have to wait one year to get the tag again and everything works out to get a massive trophy to go along with that nice whitetail!  Good luck to ya sir

They are up there....I have pics of two from that unit that are monsters.  I took the pics last week and spent a total of 8 hours looking for them.  I have heard the same story from a couple guys....and I even saw an incentive tag buck that was nice but not what I would consider worthy of the tag.  Sorry you had a tough hunt.

On the other hand...you had 19 days of hunting, which is better than 19 days of work and you still got a really nice buck.  Congrats.

Sounds like hunting. I'm sorry it didn't live up to the name of the tag. I would be happy with that buck

if your that disappointed then don't put in again and let someone else get drawn that will appreciate it. This is called hunting not killing. Like someone has said, hunting is not a race its a marathon. Be happy and enjoy it. Some people don't have the opportunity because of health or other reasons. 2500 miles. Sounds like a lot of road hunting.

Who asked your opinion? You didn't hunt with me, you don't know what the frick I did or where I hunted. This unit is mother fricking huge.  I hunted High to low and all between. I drove roads because a fricking mule deer can jump from one county to another in a matter of hours. I walked soo many miles, I had to buy a new pair of boots. I had to have my wife drive my snow tires 200 miles so I could get up to where these so-called monster bucks were residing. I can't believe that after all I went through, there are still db's on this site that think I DIDN'T DO ENOUGH.
