Youth Mt. Hull ewe hunt
« on: June 20, 2013, 06:36:50 PM »
My hunting buddies 13 yearold daughter drew the only youth tag.  Its going to be exciting.  We cant draw but she gets lucky with 3 points. Is there anyone out there with some pointers where to start scouting this summer.  Going to be making some trips to Tonasket.  Hope to have some video for you guys.

AWESOME! I am putting my son in for that tag starting next year,he has 3 points so far so I hope we get lucky. We have a cabin on Mt. Hull and we see the bighorns every fall right on the road below the cabin. Amazing offer by BKMFR, I doubt you can get better intel than he can offer . The sheep are easy to find and should be no problem once you get over and look the unit over. The sheep are generally on the mountain until there is snow later in the year. Take a ton of pictures from beginning to end and plan on sharing them if your buddy is good with it. Man what a treat. I am excited for you guys I can not imagine how I would be if my son had drawn it! There is good viewing points off of Swanson Mill rd for the south side of the Mt. you can see a great deal of the west side from Hwy 97. Stop at the forest service office in Tonasket and buy a map. Good luck.

I was working in the area last week and hiked up the Whistler Canyon Trail (there is a well marked trailhead just south of Oroville) and then cut across the SW face of MT Hull to photograph sheep. Spotted 45 ewes with 13 lambs. Didn't see any rams this time. Also spent a good deal of time glassing from HWY97 and along Swanson Mill Rd. You can spot ewes pretty quick. I usually see them hanging out above and south of the gravel pit from June through August. Not sure if they stay in that area in the fall though.

I believe that access from below is fairly limited by private property, you can access via Whistler Canyon Trail on the northwest end, or from the top via Summit Lake Rd. Folks who live in the area can probably suggest contacts that may let you hike through private property to get up on the hill.

I'm curious what size rams people have seen in the area and which areas they tend to hang out in? I'd like to get some photographs of the rams but generally see only ewes. Do the rams head up top into the timber in the summer months or remain on the SW open face along the highway?

I'll try to attach a couple pics of ewes from last week. Feel free to pm me and I can give you a map/directions to areas they tend to hang out.

Good luck, should be a really fun hunt!

I'd strongly advise you take BKMFR up on his generous offer.  Highly doubt you'll find a better resource for info and access to Mt. Hull.  He's good people too....
