margeret muzzleloader cow tag
« on: June 23, 2013, 05:02:58 PM »
I drew a muzzleloader tag for a cow in the margeret unit this year. I've never hunted the unit before and plan on making alot of scouting trips. Can anyone give me a couple tips on where to start and how the hunting was on your past hunts. Thanks

You don't need to scout too much, it should be an easy hunt. My friend had a rifle cow tag last year and filled his tag on the second day, must have been 150 head in the herd we found. Can't remember the road number but we hunted on the border of the winston by the river. The biggest advise I could give you, pay very good attention to what you shoot! One, you could have animals directly behind the one you shoot, they have big herds in there. And two, pay good attention and study your cow before you take her if you can. Hoof rot is very common in that unit and you don't want a nasty cow to take home, try to see if it's limping or just looks unhealthy. My friends cow had rot and he didn't get much meat out of her. Have fun.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Get off the roads and go threw the timber and you'll see elk in just about every patch of timber you go into. Oh yea practice shooting a lot this summer. Try the road on the left before the look out bridge that's wherei got my muzzy cow in there. Good luck!

I drew the same tag last year but due to fire prevention wasnt able to hunt it till December and couldn't get hire then about 3500 feet in elevation. But if you go past Kid Valley and shoot up the 2500 line turn onto the 2520 line and get out and walk it. The herd in there is huge. Plenty of elk to pick from. Just be cautious when choosing your cow. Lots of bulls in there with antlers that barely break the ears and can be hard to see with a muzzle loader where you can't use a scope. If you are allowed in there in October and its not shut down for fire prevention try to get up to about 5000 ft. in elevation. The herds hang out pretty high before the heavy snow fall I got into in December. Good luck. Real fun hunt
