I have a question about how much light is allowed on these two bino's (zeiss and vortex), the guy at the sportmans wherehouse said there is a number that is given to each pair. I believe it's called twilight factor, the zeiss conquest hd has a 20.5.  Does anyone know what the factor is on the vortex, and I'm talking about the 10x42 hd razor's (the 1000.00 pair).

All depends on the size of Optics you are looking at.  Here's info on Twilight Factors! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

To explain how this configuration works, all 8x42 binoculars, these have an Exit Pupil of 5.25 and a Twilight Factor of 18.3, which if you compare them to an 8x32 pair, which have an exit pupil of 4 and a twilight factor of 16, shows that the increased objective lens diameter will improve the potential for the binoculars to transmit more light.

It is true that whilst a 10x42 binocular has a smaller exit pupil of 4.2mm, they have a better twilight factor of 20.5 and therefore should show better detail in dim light. They will however most probably have a far narrower field of view and that is why for birding an 8x magnification is often (not always) preferred to a 10x. There is also the point to remember that to make more powerful magnifications, thicker glass is needed and the thicker the glass, the less light that is transmitted through it.

So which is better for hunting in your opinion, 10x42 or 8x32? I am down to choosing the zeiss or the vortex, the zeiss pro's are, Made in Germany (not Japan), been around for a long time with a great reputation. The vortex pro's, lifetime unlimited warranty. The con's of zeiss, limited warranty. The con's of vortex, they haven't been around very long, is this why they have the best warranty, to get some customers trust? I would rate them dead even on clarity and comfort, the vortex is hard to look past with the warranty but the zeiss is proven the test of time. Which model has a higher twilight factor with the 10x42 hd models? Thanks for your input, I will be buying on of these after the drawing results (I may need guide money).

Vortex has been in the Optics business since 1986, here's some info on their warranty that surpasses all others, this is a copy & paste straight from them. >>>>>>>>>>>>

“If a customer had a problem
with a binocular, a lot of times there
was a big discussion about whether
it was a manufacturer’s defect or
your fault,” Dan recalled. “As a retailer,
we might be telling the customer
they’d have to pay $50 or $150 to
have it fixed. We didn’t want that to
be the case with Vortex so everything
is backed by a VIP Warranty, which
stands for Very Important Promise. If
you have a problem with our product,
we make it our problem and we
make it go away.”
“We’ve heard the stories about
having to ship other brands back to
the Orient, and three months later
you haven’t heard anything,” Joe
said. “That’s why it’s all handled
here. There’s no paperwork to fill out.
The customer just needs to send it
back to Vortex, or the dealer can
return it. Within roughly a week
you’re taken care of. If we can’t fix it,
we’ll replace it. It’s fully transferable,
all you have to do is return the product,
or a piece of it.”
Janet has seen binoculars dogs
have chewed to shreds, and trucks
have driven over. When a customer
comes in wondering if the bad thing
he let happen is going to be covered,
and finds out it is, that dealer has a
customer for life. And Vortex has a
dealer for life.

I don't have any questions on their warranty, that's one of their pro's. I was wondering about the other stuff, thanks.

I have been looking to buy a used pair of Swarovski 10x42 EL binos. Came across this thread and don't intend to take thread any other direction, just wanted to say that if anyone knows of someone selling a pair a PM would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Don't let anyone talk you down. If you're ready to throw down on a pair of EL's, don't settle for less. I haven't made it up that far yet as I'm happy with my Nikon EDG.

Ya know this last year I purchased a set of Lieca Geovids and Im still not sure how I ever was able to make it through a season without them. best money I have ever spent on optics and the range finder capability is so wonderful. Few top end brands make similar products and im sure they are all great. Just something to think about. I know you would not regret having a pair of the combo glass.

I absolutely agree.
Swaros are the alpha of the alpha's, but I sure do like my Nikon Premier LX's.
