Looking for a good back country saw
« on: June 21, 2013, 10:05:22 AM »
Looking for ideas on a good bow saw , packable. I rather have a saw that works good over having one that's super light. Looking for a saw to cut up wood for camp. Thanks for any input.

I have the take apart Wyoming Bow Saw and love it.  Comes with a wood and bone blade.  Great all around saw.  Somewhat limited on the size of log you can cut but it does a pretty good job on anything up to about 6" or so.  It is 1 lb with the camo sheath, a bit more with the leather case.  Super easy to get parts for from Wyoming Knife too if you ever lose a part or a blade.

It' REALLY handy when you want to saw the horns off a critter so you don't have to pack out his melon.

a bit tricky to assemble the first time; but after that you know the little tips/tricks.

I do believe that a good friend of mine invented that saw. He comes from a family of machinists and backpackers. He made a prototype that we tested a couple of years ago in the Idaho back country. We made note of the corrections but I never got to see the final piece. This one is 99% identical.

Doesn't the frame get in the way with those saws?

Wow, cool stuff on that website coyotecowboy.

$185 for a camp chair?  And anyone could make that saw with a little time in the shop.

I prefer just a standard bow saw, 21" is just fine. Match the blade to the wood you expect to cut. http://www.traditionalwoodworker.com/products.asp?dept=650  has green wood and dry wood blades with different pitch teeth.

For a back pack saw, I go even smaller though.  My buddy has The Gerber Myth and it has proven to be a good all around saw. http://www.opticsplanet.com/gerber-myth-folding-saw.html  Although I don't have that one, I have an old no-name brand folding saw that only cuts on the pull stroke. -No chance of bending the blade. -Something to think of.  It is fine on rounds to 3". I also have an older model Kirshaw blade kit with saw. Cuts on pull stroke. It's been good on wood or bone but I wish it had a finer tooth blade. I think I'd like this blade better. http://www.opticsplanet.com/kershaw-1098k-alaskan-blade-trader-knife-w-polymer-handle-1098ak.html

Backpacking or?

I seldom use my saw for wood. I carry a Puma Hunter knife and the backside is a pretty good hatchet for small stuff.

yes, its too short to be very effective. the 20"? would work alot better but its damn heavy. like i said, im going to pack like a 24" blade and build the rest out of wood

I have this saw and keep it under the backseat of my truck. Have had to use it to clear downed trees on some backroads on occasion. Easy to throw in the pack, doesn't take up much space.

Good thread.  What diameter of log/branch can you reasonably cut with a wyoming saw?

I have the saw that CoyoteCowboy posted and for wood it is a very good bow saw.  It easily fits in a pack and takes little to no room.  My only problem is it does rattle a bit in your pack and is a bit big for simply cutting up an elk/deer head.  For OP's stated use of wood cutting I believe it would work better than the Wyoming saw, which I also have and prefer for use on animals.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

bestmade stuff is spendy; and usually you can find a similar (non-branded) alternate.

i haven't used it on bone; just wood. around the yard a use a bow-saw but bring the bestmade one into the woods.

Kershaw makes a pretty good light weight pack saw. It's like a Wyoming pack saw but folds and stores within its self comes with 2 blades. I have both but take this Kershaw on pack in hunts.

The Wyoming is a good saw. You can use the smaller versions blades by taking sections out of the frame if you want. I only use the full size blade both for bone or wood.  I learned the hard way if you break it down for packing make sure to tighten the wing nut so you don't lose it. I carry a spare in my pack now.  It made quartering an elk a little tough by having to tie and twist parachute cord to hold the blade, but it worked

How much lighter is the Kershaw than the folding Gerber bone/wood saw? I have a Wyoming saw but always carry the Gerber due to its light weight. Its not very good for logs, but neither is my small Wyoming saw.

Not that particular product, but I've used a very similar product a lot. They require time and a strong back to get through anything big (4 inches) or more. They aren't too bad for small stuff, but expect sore back and arms. This is more of the emergency saw that you hope to never have to use rather than a saw you like to use every day.
