Best over the counter tag
« on: June 22, 2013, 11:32:58 PM »
I wanted to generate some conversation on what states offer the best over the counter non-resident tags. Archery or rifle, deer, elk, bear etc.

I'll start. I have hunted otc (over the counter) tags in Arizona for archery deer. Any buck in August (still in velvet), December and January. Many units offered and you can hunt mule deer and/or couse whitetail. They are only offered in archery, and the prime strip units are excluded. Still, there are plenty of hot units to score 150+ mulies.
Cousewhitetail.com is a good forum.

I would like to find a good diy hunt for big whitetail, and possibly bull elk if there are any. Might as well try while waiting YEARS for draw points to build.

Would you mind posting about how much your DIY Arizona hunt cost? And what was the season date?

I like August, but December and January are great late rut hunts.
225 for a archery deer tag, and they also charge like 150 for a license now. 375 and your legal. And they dont have all the rules like WA for arrow weight ratios etc... and u can use any broadhead. A lot of good units that produce big deer, especially on a year with good rain.

They sure are!  8) I love wearing a tee shirt and chasing Arizona muleys around with a bow in January  :IBCOOL:

Here are the dates for 2013 into 2014:
August 23 - September 12
December 13 - December 31
January 1 - January 31

You have to buy a new license and tag on January 1 (one for the 2014 year). So if you come down say on December 27th and kill a buck at the end of December, you could get lucky and kill a 2nd after New Years--two bucks in the same trip!

I have quite a few honey holes so if anyone is interested in a hunt swap please feel free to PM me. Primarily interested in Wyoming.

I miss the days you could do that with Javalina too.  Those were some fun days.  Ultimate combo hunting for nonres., but no more :'(  Unless you can walk on to the Res for javalina still :dunno:  Can you still do that?

If you want to hunt WT's on an OTC tag, I think ID is hard to beat.  But I have also seen some big WT's in MT and MT is basically an OTC tag now.

I would have to agree with Idaho WT tag. good from Oct. 10 through end of November, any whitetail.  Not a far drive and really not that expensive compared to other states.

Idaho has some slammer whitetails and a better season that captures the entire rut, best out if state opportunity in my opinion for whitetails.

:yeah: Montana has some good white tail hunting but its more expensive and farther. Ive found better whitetail hunting on public land generally in Idaho than Montana.

I would consider Montana OTC now just because its 100% draw.  And being able to hunt just about the whole state east to west from October through the end of November, I would say Montana.  Mulies or whitetails and can take up to 8 deer a year if you buy doe tags, how do you beat that.

If ur talking about hunting the SE corner for WT's you will find very few.  Most of the WT's in ID are found in the northern 1/3 of the state.

Gotta love those heavy, dark horned timber bucks in the panhandle!  If you can find one that is  :chuckle: Not as many around as a few years ago.

NoDak whitetail is an OTC archery tag.  A bit of a haul, but there are some pigs out there...

Alaska Moose. OIL in many States and not an option in many others... for the price of some out of State deer tags...and punches a bucket list tab for many a hunter.

OR blacktails?? Land access is NOT AN ISSUE!! I hate hunts where "hunters" that cough up big bucks get easy access to big bucks, or bulls. Oregon blacktails are a real tough hunt but you are welcome to chase em, just buy your OTC tag...

ID archery elk.  The area that we hunt is any elk, it is the entire month of September, the area is archery only in Septmeber with the late hunt a muzzle loader season, and it is any elk.  After Labor Day we don't see anyone during the week and maybe a handful of rigs on the weekend.

Not the greatest prices but MT is hard to beat.  North Central ID probably the best if going for WT only.

Alaska moose & caribou are OTC in many areas and Dahl sheep is aswell if you have a close relative up there or can afford a guide.

I've also had good luck hunting OTC areas for mule deer and whitetail in Montana.

Unfortunately, transportation to Alaska isn't cheap and neither is a Montana deer tag.

Depends on how much money you have to spend on a tag.  :dunno:There are some pretty decent tags to be bought in AZ, UT and CO. You said over the counter... I'm sure there's a counter where you go to pay for an auction tag :chuckle:
