Access is not an issue for most of the elk hunting in the dayton area.  Most of it is in the Nat Forest and open to everyone.  Wolf Creek and table rock are great areas.  scouting wont help you to much now because the animals will be in different spots in the fall then they are now.  My advice to anyone that gets this permit is to spend the deer season hunting in the Dayton area even if you don't normally do.  The one year and probably the only year in your life that you draw this permit I would not care wether or not you get a deer at all and just consentrate on elk so spend your deer season in there and who knows that maybe you will get a nice buck to boot because they have them in there too if you are lucky.  Big bull season starts the day after the deer season closes and by that time you should know right where the bull you want to shoot lives and hangs out.  Its never a for sure thing because that country can eat you alive.  We had tags in there in 2006 and 2007 and last year.  We have one tag in there this year.  The number of big bulls in there is way down from the 2006 and 2007.  That is why they cut the permit numbers i think in half.  Good luck!  you will see them but by the time you get to them they seem to disappear.

:yeah:Good advice right there.  I wouldn't EXPECT to get a deer, but if you put in the time on the boots and behind the glass they are in there.

Our first trip will be just to get familiar with the area and find a camp spot, great idea on the deer hunting, we planned on being there a few days early to do some scouting, and locate some bulls, bonus to be able to deer hunt.

yeah honostly i would just scout, research, etc. All these guys draw these prime elk permits and ask for help. I'll help people with deer but at the same time im not gonna give out any knowledge of the elk in the area I've grown up hunting. I guess thats part of the adventure for you :) non the less good luck. hunt hard brother

What type of tag is it????

Also who the crap cares about helping out a fellow hunter/site member? If i have the tag, Which I do, I would hope to get help, like I have, and I'm even a local. I know the area and still don't mind asking for help. I'm one man i cant be everywhere at once if somebody sees a nice bull and wants to share that with me that is great. The OP is only asking for help. He does not seem to be asking for people to hunt for him. Settle down guys help him out. I have always been of a mind that if i can help a person fill a tag i will. I have passed on tons of info to tag holders that I ran into in the past 10 years of archery hunting. It takes so much time to draw the tags why not help out? Chances are the bull you see will be dead before you have a chance to kill it anyway.

Bigdaddy, what type of tag is this? If it's archery..... sorry for this year and this year only i can't really help as I'm holding that tag in my pocket as well. If it's muzzy or rifle I'll be glad to help. Hell, you can even come over this way and we can go scout together. I'll show you as much of that country as I can. Unless of course you have archery tags. Then you are on your own. No hard feeling but after 10 years of waiting I got to try and stack the deck for myself.

Amen Cory! I couldn't have said it better.
If my sacred ground was a draw only area, that only gives out a hand full of branched antler bull tags, and my chances of drawing it were really high, I would diffinally help out anyone that did get drawn, I believe that's being a sportsman,  unless as Cory states I had the same tag for the same year, every hunter I know can respect that, by the way Cory I have the rifle tag.

I agree with borntoslay big time... bigdaddy,  Just because a guy doesn't give out any info doesn't mean he's not at sportmans, in fact in my opinion I think its smart because the more info u give out only makes u nd ur family nd hunting buddies odds of drawing go way down.u help one guy nd overtime it turns into fifty

Well i hold firm to what I said. Biddaddy if you are coming over to scout let me know when i'll go out if I can. If i fill my tag and if i don't fill my tag i'll help get you into the area that i saw the bulls. It's NATIONAL FOREST everybody has a right to hunt it! Maybe i'm doing to wrong in some peoples eyes but i'll sleep ok knowing i helped out a fellow hunter and hope it's paid forward to others or even myself in the future.
