Been quite a while since I've hunted fall turkeys. I' ve become preoccupied with other pursuits at that time. We used to have some great turkey/grouse combo hunts up in the NE. Some good fishing to be had as well up there too. Did you draw a tag? Hunting general? Good luck when you go!

After striking out on 3 trips this spring I'm going to find one this fall.  If I can hit one with a bow is another question. :chuckle:

I'm always stoked about it. If I wasn't married I'd be out scouting or hunting all the time. It's nice that there's two seasons.

I hunted the 101 during the spring season and the birds were very few and far between. There were prescribed burns and some heavy logging pressure in the areas I was in and the turkeys seemed to have moved out. Just a heads up, hopefully they will have returned after the spring interferences. Good luck, I know how fun fall turkey hunting can be!

How do you hunt fall turkey? Will they come to calls?

Some people scatter the flock to the 4 winds and sit at or very near the breakup sight.  If you're going for gobbles best to start up with gobbles, tom/jake yelps or other male sounds within 10 to 15 minutes.   If you're going for the hens and young, wait about 30 to 40 minutes, and start with kee kees, kee runs, and/or hen assembly calls.  You can listen to these on the NWTF website.

Other people pattern the birds and setup an ambush.

I have done both with good success.

I haven't been able to call them in the fall. They just ran away, or had no visible response at all.
Fall seems like ambush time.
Spring is call time.
This is my experience anyway.

If 101 doesn't look good after a day or two I'll see about 121, 108, 105. The usual order.
I'm getting weepy. Must sign off...
