glock 30 or 3 inch 1911?
« on: June 25, 2013, 01:56:47 PM »
I am thinking of selling my glock 30 and possibly picking up a Kimber ultra carry. Anyone have input? I am pretty stuck on a compact 45. I have had my glock for a few years and seems like it just doesn't fit me.

Im a glock guy but if the gun does not fit you well your not going to shoot it good so i would give the 1911 a try

I sold my glock 20 and bought a Kimber eclipse custom II full size. I couldn't be happier with my choice i am also looking at a Kimber compact but i am interested in the stainless ultra raptor II. I wish they would offer a bobtail version.

I shoot it well enough... just never felt like it fits my hand well... each time I pick up a 1911 it just feels like it fits... though I haven't shot many 1911s.

Is this for a CCW or just general use?  Carrying cocked and locked takes a little getting used to, the Glock might have an advantage there depending on how you feel about that.  I love shooting my 5" Kimber though, I think the 1911 works better as a full size gun.

There is compact, then there is subcompact.  I think you are talking about a subcompact with a 3" barrel.  The reason I say this is in a 1911, .45acp, subcompacts can be very finicky as you have a whole lot going on in a very short window of time.  The pistol fires, slide comes back very quickly and has to strip a round very quickly with less mass to do it with (then a 5" slide).  Basically some .45 1911 subcompacts or bullpups are good, some are jammomatics.

Personally, as much as I like 1911's, I would stick to the Glocks/Springfields, etc. in a subcompact.  OR, try a subcompact 1911 in 9mm.  As far as a compact pistol (4-4.5" barrel), 1911 .45's are (usually) excellent.

I have shot a few subcompacts, some run, some don't and others run when clean and wet (oiled) and some don't run well even then.

for all around use. I don't see it much different with the 1911 locker and cocked with the safety on versus the glock with a loaded chamber.
Is there a major difference? Other than the hammer?

Just trigger pull.  The bugger picker is the best safety.

It's more psychological than anything.  The cocked hammer over a loaded chamber gives some people the willys.  There's a safety though, and a grip safety too.  Remember it's single action only so you pretty much have to carry it that way if you want it instantly available.

But they have a positive firing pin block that disengages the firing pin unless grip safety is depressed. So even a hammer falling without the grip safety depressed will not fire... in theory... I agree the booger picker and safety between brains is paramount.

Well all know both Kimber and Glock will get the job done. I've shot some of both that I shoot lights out and some of both that just don't fit me and I would be better off throwing the gun at the bad guy. I'm a Kimber fan and have shot the Ultra Carry as well as the compact version of the Eclipse...both great shooters. If you are interested I'd say go for it...can't really go wrong with either when it all boils down to the basics: Will you be able to shoot if the you know what hits the fan and when it does, will you shoot what you are aiming at. Everything else is just window dressing.

Yup, there's the thumb safety, the grip safety, and the firing pin block.  There's also a half cock notch to catch the falling hammer if the sear breaks (in theory at least).  Of course you need all those safetys because it's all set to go off...

I'm not knocking the 1911, it's my favorite pistol by far.  Just saying SAO does take a little getting used to particularly if you're going to carry it concealled all day everyday...

When I was freshly 21, I had my heart set on a para-ord compact 1911 as my first handgun. Then I went to a gun shop and held one and couldn’t stand how short the grip was, about an inch of my hand hung over the bottom.

Since you are talking about Kimber, you know the quality is there. If you like the way it handles, you’ve probably got a winner.

What about the baby Glock 36?
Single stack .45acp.
