ELK in words
« on: October 16, 2008, 02:27:57 PM »
leaving in less than 48 hours for our big bull elk hunt and thought i would post a few words b4 I leave
you guys wont have to hear me for a week for sure and maybe longer. what are you gonna do?
ha ha
here goes....
 :IBCOOL:  :chuckle: :IBCOOL: :P

Some people say that it is just luck to get game when you are hunting, and it is to some extent, but i am starting to believe it is more about knowledge than anything. I have been trying to gain an understanding of ELK and their habits during any given time of hunting season. I have tried to know where they will be at any given time. That doesn't mean that they will always be there, but that is where we plan to start. For instance when it was the early part of the season and the weather was hot, we tried to scout where there is a good food supply and where it will be cool for them. I have read that it is harder for an Elk to stay cool in the heat than it is for them to stay warm in the cold. I have also discovered that if the rut is on I needed to seek out the cows to find a bull that we may be able to hunt. We found some bedding areas, and some food sources and now hope to find Elk.
We just hope that our scouting of our area will pay off.

When hunting for Elk we will need to fool their scenses which would be their eyes, ears, and noses. Do not let them be aware of our presence, instead we will need to be aware of their presence. I believe we do have the upper hand if we just use the resourses out there at our disposal. Make the phone calls, use the web, seek the advice and use the proper equipment.
So I believe we have done all this and I can only hope to come home with a big bull or 3.
:-)
just my  :twocents:

Just try to remember the season starts on the 20th.  Lots of idiots out there packing on the 18th and 19th "scouting" ruining their hunt for the next week because they are idiots.  Elk can learn from you too.
