Yakima River Canyon Sheep

Went camping in the Canyon to see the sheep on the way back from Spokane to see our daughter graduate from Eastern.  Saw about 100 or so most on the Selah Butte side.  They had about 20% lambs all looking good from a long way off.  Saw about 20 healthy animals on the Umtanum  side but didn't see any lambs.  They look good ( on the Selah Butte side), a mix of ewes lambs and young rams in the herd.  I'm sure the big rams are up there somewhere! Had a great time, never tire of watching them.

Uncle has the Umtanum tag this year. Should be a fun hunt.

Was with a permit holder in the Selah Butte unit three years ago.  The hunter wanted "lamb tips" but all of the old rams had horns close to their head and broomed so we took a young one for his full body mount collection.  I am around the Swakane herd all the time where their horns grow fast and wide so  seeing these old rams with horns rubbing their face was something knew to me.  The new World Record won't come out of Selah Butte.

Had the Selah Butte tag last year. Lots of sheep, lots of rams, totally fun experience.  End result was a 163ish ram.

Maybe I can help clear up the confusion about the Selah Butte permit hunt of 2010.
Permit holder wanted a ram with tips; all of the mature rams that we found were broomed off so he took a young ram and was thrilled with it. 
Aaron's world record ram was pictured from the Swakane unit was pictured just to how those rams differ in horn growth from the slow growing; close to face horns of the Selah Butte rams.  Selah Butte is an easy hunt, will see many, many mature and younger rams.  Access is on private property but access is easy and not too expensive.
I posted a photo of the young ram from Selah Butte's 2010 hunt; made a nice full body mount to go with the hunters collection.
