Some of my favorite first memories were hunting rabbits and grouse. Enjoy the start of the tradition.

Are you aware that rabbit season (09/01-03/15) is closed? Posting photo(s) of your son with poached game doesn't strike me as a prudent thing to do; just sayin'.

Love some rabbit hunting... But I didn't think cotton tail opened up until Sept 1?  Wouldn't these technically be poached rabbits? :dunno:

Obviously these rabbits were in the garden.  Don't you see him smiling on the yard?  They definitely were damaging property.

On your own property all you need are plants you don't want a rabbit to eat and there isn't a rabbit season.

That's fine and dandy, but there are restrictions on lethal removal of nuisance wildlife, for racoons, one is supposed to contact WDFW for disposal of the carcass.  I don't think you are allowed to eat them.  Not sure, but I would guess it is the same for rabbits.

Yes, the Europeans are 2X-3X bigger and often different colors.  Pretty much found in the San Juans and other isolated locations only.

We raise rabbits and attend many shows.
Maybe they shot their own bunnies. I know a breeder who uses a .22 air rifle to dispatch them.
Those could be a cross between Netherland Drawf and Mini Rex and the color is called Chinchilla....
Just saying

I know a guy that got a suppressor for his 10-22 so he could shoot the rabbits that were eating his garden, without disturbing the neighbors.  Me, I use a 22 cal. PCP air rifle on the Starlings and Eurasian Doves in my area.  The neighbors know it, and love me for it--especially the neighbor with the big garden...  :chuckle:

There are WDFW police who read HW and post regularly - I do not see the need to "investigate" every freaking picture posted on HW, all you do is prevent people from posting pics.   If WDFW police want to go bust some kid for shooting rabbits that's their call, not yours.

That said posting a link to the rules would be acceptable  :twocents:

I don't want to bust the poor kids chops..... Having said that, I don't have much respect for poachers. Rabbits are a game animal with a well publisized season. No different than deer or elk.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.

Nobody is disparaging anyone.  Is pointing out that cottontails are a game animal and not in season a "dbag comment"?  If you think so then I hope you never have to meet a Game Warden.

I love to see pics of people getting animals especially kids. Nothing better than a kid getting something. With that said i like to see it in season though. Thats all.

IMHO, the best lessons in hunting start with an emphasis first on safe gun handling, and next on reading and understanding the regulations.  His muzzle is pointed in a safe direction and the action is open with his finger off the trigger - well done. This appears to have been a happy experience for the young lad and most likely, the pictures were taken during a legal hunting season.  :dunno:  If not, it might be prudent and helpful for dad to sit down with his son and let him know that they may have screwed up and "here's how you keep from doing that again and avoid trouble with the law". A good all 'round hunting education includes discussions and practice of safety, ethics, and adhering to regulations.

I like the picture and the joy on this kid's face. I'd hate to see that turn into disappointment or worse if this were to happen out of season and a game enforcement officer were involved. IRem, good for you for bringing your son up in hunting. We need all the new blood we can get.

You only learn by messing up, we where all kids at one time... and I'm sure a lot of you dad types haven't done the father thing ever before. Sure it's a game animal but I doubt the kid is terrorizing the rabbit population and being a menace to conservation by tatering a rabbit or two before the season starts. For all you know he shot the rabbits that were terrorizing his fathers garden.

like any game warden will care about a rabbit when they have more important things to do.
