Does anybody know how many bears are being shot in self defense?  I assume it must happen, but when was the last time you saw a verified report of someone shooting a bear because they were charged?

Actually Arees....we had a site member do the very thing just a month or so ago. He was with his family camping and checking his cam. Got charged, pulled his cap gun and got off a few rounds. He reported it, it was investigated, and that was it. Don't know if the bear was ever found or if the thread had any follow up. I believe it is pretty rare.

I am sure that it happens, as in the case that you give.  I just don't think it happens often.  This strange woman seems to believe that there are lots of bears being shot due to bluff charges being mistaken for real charges.  I think bears are mostly being shot because they are tasty.

Wow, she sure seems stupid to me.  I don't know much about bears but I know that they are fast if they want to be.  Just yesterday I went to check my camera and a bear was hanging around on the edge of my little spot.  I didn't know what to do or if it had cubs or what, but I had my chainsaw and wanted to do some clearing around my camera.  So I fired it up, cut a little wood and then walked towards him.  I think he was more curious than ever about me now and just stood up and watched me as I approached.  He eventually took off but not until I took a picture of him with my regular camera.  I am still afraid of bears for no reason in particular.

terrible thing to put out there for the general public. that woman is insane and will most likely get herself injured or killed or someone else who sees that video and just assumes they can walk right up to a bear and chase it around.

they have a huge bear problem in some parts of new jersey, new york etc....this bear if I had to guess is totally acclimated to people this woman is totally ignorant of actual wild animals....that bear did not bluff "charge" it huffed and said hey buzz off crazy b..... if it had charged she would have dropped her camera and pissed herself is my guess.....the bad part is that fatty bear is more dangerous than most we see because it isnt really afraid of humans and obviously humans are not afraid of it...that is a deadly combination doesnt have to be a bear that combo in a deer can have a bad ending....

   I don't wish harm on anyone but it usually is the types who think they've got the animal all figured out.

Definitely not a bluff charge.  I've been bluffed by two bears and I'm sure we're thinking of the same hurtling mass of black fur and claws through the brush at 25 mph.  One got off free...one didn't.

Let's see well fed bear, no cubs, crazy lady with camera. 
She's teaching the bear not to be afraid of humans.  Bad idea.

Treadwell made the same mistake she is.  Bear wasn't interested in him while the salmon were running and food was plentiful.  He made the mistake of going back after the salmon stopped and he became food. (I only feel badly for his girlfriend who became desert).
