GMU 666,667,663,501 looking for maps or a good area near Lacey

I am looking to buy some paper maps as I don't have the funds to purchase a GPS this year and I don't know where to buy one. I live in Lacey. And everywhere I find online to purchase one they have horrible reviews and I don't want to spend what little extra cash I have on a crappy product. anyone know of a store in the area or have a few maps they are willing to get rid of? I have always hunted with my dad but he is hunting other areas this year so I'm all by myself. Or, if you have a good Idea of where to go this year and could help me. This will be the First year of hunting that I will be by myself(pretty sad since I'm 25).

Know anyone in the military, have them get you a topo map of the training areas ive got several laying around. Covers a lot of 666 and 667, if i can find them ill send ya a pm.

I would start out with the DNR Public Land maps. They are $9 each, and for you, three maps should cover all the areas you might want to hunt near Lacey. I would get the Chehalis River, Centralia, and Shelton maps.

Also, I forgot to mention, there is a brand new Capitol Forest map available. It hadn't been updated for a dozen years or more, but this new map just became available a month or two ago.

That's only if you want to hunt up there. Which I'm not sure is a good idea. All the people that normally hunt the Vail tree farm, will probably go to Capitol Forest. As if it wasn't already overcrowded.

But if you can't find a better place, it's public land and lots of area to hunt.

Yeah I know that the Vail area is closed off this year and was thinking about hunting it since I am willing to walk in. but I have never hunted there so I would be going in blind.

Vail is closed even to walk in hunting this year, unless you buy the $150 permit.

OH, I thought it was just closed for motorized vehicles. . . definitely not going to crapitol forest  then. It's going to be a freaking infested with road hunters.

As far as I know, there are no training areas in 667. Boundary between 666 & 667 is highway 507. Military owns no land south of hwy 507. JBLM is mostly 652; southern end is 666.

The 501 has some large chunks of dnr land.  Verls in Shelton sells the weyco maps and the L C Outdoors GMU maps. I really like the L C maps. They are like 12-15 $ something like that.

There is a field training area on the south side of 507 between 8th ave and east gate rd that might be just the edge of 667 but I don't think you can hunt there

I may be missing something here but what about Google Maps and Google Earth.  I use them for any area I hunt whether it's Colorado, Montana or here in Washington.  The maps I have gotten from Weyco or other sources in this area don't show me enough detail on the roads or other area features.  And, with Google Earth,  you can print them out and have a permanent record of whichever area you want to look at.  If you don't have a computer or don't know how to get 'er done, just pm me and tell me what you want and I'll do it for you.

Go spend 15bucks at Office Depot Lacey and pick up a Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer map book. This will get you a good look at the entire state.

Preview it in the store first to see if it will satisfy your needs.....

That's all 652, and it's really "east" of 507. 667 is all south of Nisqually River; no JBLM there!

A good map to use are the gazateers. They are about $20 and it shows the whole state and logging roads and trails in units.

I use an app on my iPad, "Trimble outdoor topo maps" search the App Store you'll find it. Lots of cool features, imagery, labeled streets, topo lines, and it's free. You can even overlay topo and imagery. When I find a new place to scout or hike ill take screen shots and print them out and tape them together. Easier and cheaper than ordering new maps every time you want to check out a new place.
