Blacktail Deer Bait?

I was wondering what a good deer bait was for blacktail. I am a new hunter and just trying to get started. A few people have told me that a good way to get some big blacktail is to bait them.

I would skip it. Mainly because any bear within miles will come in and then your spot is blown out. I would focus on learning an area like has been mentioned in other threads. For kicks and giggles apples are your best bet.

Apples. Apples. And apples. Some use salt licks but I haven't had any luck with them. Wet or dry COB can work too.  I just put out some Purina Deer Chow in a gravity feeder with a camera on it, so we'll see how that works out.

I agree apples are the most sure way of getting any deer. BTW Wolfdog I tried that purina deer chow, picked up a bag at wilco and the deer at my stand wanted nothing to do with it. If it works out for you shoot me a pm I have more than half a bag left and I noticed you were in vancouver as well, Its yours or anyone else that may want to take it off my hands.

That's where I picked mine up too in sale this week at Wilco haha.

I will probably go check my cameras early next week. Have a camera on the deer chow and one on the dry cob.

Short term.... "SWAMP-DONKEY" sweet lick, long term......Dark brown 50# mineral block.

buck jam apple flavor. had deer come into it within 2 hours of putting it out.

Fresh alder branches, with leaves, would work well if the deer are moving through already and if bears may be a problem.  Otherwise, as mentioned, apples, apples, apples.  We feed Del's Allstock pellets as well.  Our deer are not picky though, I just saw two eating Ocean Spray by my chicken coop.

Free....that is the kind of apples to use. Other than that....nope.

A small, soft variety works well. Sometimes it can take a while for deer to take to apples.

Really?  Must be some well fed deer. 

As mentioned, free apples are the best, smash a few around to get the scent out.  When we put out the allstock pellets, we have to sometimes put the broken apples around the pellets for a few days before they will eat them.  Since I can place apples every day, I just stick a few out at a time.  I also try not to put any out that will still be there after dark as I try to condition the deer to look for them during daylight.

find a crab apple tree or someone with one. No one eats them  as far as I know and deer love em
