West Klickitat cow tag
«
on:

I drew a GMU578 tag sort of by accident. It was a third choice. Given the fires and recent logging, is this still a viable unit? I hunted it years ago, but not recently.

Fires?? Most of the fire was in The Lewis River unit and Indian Rez but all it has done is make it better feed for the elk. Should be a fun hunt

When is the hunt? I happen to live in the middle of the 578.

I drew a modern cow tag for this unit too. Second year in a row and 2nd choice.

Put the work in and I see no reason not to fill a cow tag in the 578.

My tag is modern rifle and I selected it mostly because I'm a (minor) disabled vet who will be 70 this year and I hunt alone. I like the beauty of the area and the fact that the weather is normally better than in my old haunts in the Lewis River unit. I know I'll need to dodge around private land and am a little worried about harvest on the reservation, but hope to get a good hunt.
I'm just wondering generally if this is a good tag or if I would be better off back in Lewis River or Packwood. I would like to get another elk or two before I get old.....

Well, when the time coms for your hunt let me know, if I am available I will help you out. Dodging the private land isn't all that hard as is staying off the reservation. I'd be more than happy to help out a fellow vet

Whats nice about the West Klickitat is that there is a ton of new clear cuts and it has made for some great elk habitat. I suggest hunting deer over there and locating the area's that are holding elk. use to be around conboy and up towards the res were the good spots but anymore you can find elk all the way down on the breaks of the klickitat and down towards the columbia. stop and talk with the Krepps. they have around 16000 acres, you maybe able to gain permission to hunt some of their land. good luck

If you don't have permission to hunt on the private land its pretty tough. Kreps do fee hunting now so if your wanting to pony up a chunk of $ then that would be an option but I doubt they let anybody but family hunt for free. This hunt was all either sex till two years ago and I don't think it has had much effect yet anyways. There are elk around but vast majority are on the refuge or private land, rest is a crapshoot at best. Hate to tell you but IMO not a good tag unless you have private access or pay for the fee hunting.
Disabled vet Kreps might help you out im not sure... worth a shot

Like I said, look me up when the time comes. There are Elk around and I watch them all the time. Lots of land to hunt besides Kreps. In fact, there really arent that many elk on there property and the ones that are certainly don't stay there. This will be the 4th year that the unit has been 3 point or better, it was 2009 was the last year of any elk. If I could take a cow, I'd have meat in the freezer every year.

Plenty of elk... I filled mine last year opening morning, and my buddy filled his sec morning back behind Mill Pond. Not the easiest hike in, but they are up there. PM me if you want more details!
