The Northwest Adventure Center at JBLM may be helpful to you as well.
Find a partner to learn the basics, there is a ton of info that only comes from being in the woods. No video or book can teach you better than hands on. By the way I have been doing the hunting thing for 27 years. I'm still learning... Best of luck...Rtspring
Obviously you will need a good knife and sharping stone. Are you planning on hunting the west side or east? I think binos are a necessity especially on the east side. The Remington 700 is a great gun. My favorite caliber is 7mm but almost all of the popular deer calibers will work. And most important thing is patience (I think so aleast). If you plan on hunting elk or going deep in the woods for deer and bear I would pick up a pack Frame. hope this helps. Good Luck
i use to live there and we had horses.all the guys that were at the stables were hunters might be another spot to check for info in the area
If you're planning on rifle hunting on the west side and you haven't bought a rifle yet, save a few more pennies and buy stainless. You will not regret it but you might if you don't.
Well man Im on JBLM as well, I got all kinds of guns that we can try out, plus I can reload or as some people like..haaaaandload anything. Im kinda like you as well, only been here for 5 months. Soooo mabe we can link up or something.
If you dont have a good topo map of post get one from your s3 it has the training areas on it and is really useful when looking for spots. On JBLM seems every week the training areas are open for something different like archery one week, closed the next followed by rifle. If you still looking for a spot PM me and I can tell you where to start for different seasons and tactics I have used for each area. Ill be out there archery for bear, deer and the elusive elk
How's the search going?I'm almost in the same situation as yourself...I lived in the state from 1997 - 2003 but never got out hunting (yes...this time I can blame an ex-wife on it). I was raised in NW Pennsylvania and grew up hunting, but after joining the USAF, I got stationed overseas and my hunting kind of dried up.Anyhow...divorced and remarried a Northern PA girl (my ex was British and anti-gun). I have now retrieved my guns and built my collection up a bit...still need more in the collection. I just moved back here from Washington DC area and am looking to start hunting again. Need to find places to hunt and people to hunt with. What I "don't" want to do is step on the toes of those who already have established hunting areas that they claim...nothing worse than an "outsider" hunting your old hunting grounds that you and your family/friends have been hunting for years.So...if you are looking for someone to hunt with...I'll be willing. I have a background in hunting...little bit rusty, but able. I'm going to see who I know here already that hunts and see if I can join them or have them point me in the right direction...if so, I can bring you along if you like.Just a thought...
