Skunked at Point No Point

Father in Law is in for a week from Tennessee and wanted to go fishing.  He bought a 3 day license and we went to Point no Point this morning... lots of baby ling cod and grass, but no Salmon. 

All I have is a 17 foot aluminum canoe.  Any sugestions on where to take him for the next couple days?

Rumor had it that 2 salmon were caught and kept this morning from out there, but I didn't see it happen.

Get some crab gear and go for it.

Try Kingston, that's a good bet for keeper salmon right now.  There are usually some resident Coho around the ferry dock and out on Apple tree cove pt.

I suggested we pass on the crab since I did not have a pot... I'm really regretting that decision now.

That looks like a lot of private property off of Apple Tree...  Is there a public access or a place to park and walk in that is acceptable to the folks who live around there?

I remember fishing from Kingston around a boat marina area.  Can't remember where exactly it was, I was young but we had caught fish there and people caught fish too.  There would be a bunch of bait or maybe it was smelt that would be up along the dock when we fished there before.

Thanks for the heads up.  My attitude has changed when it comes to not catching fish.  I used to get frustrated and want to quit.  Now I see it a bit different.  Each cast and retrieve is an event which contributes to a catch.  I can practice casting accurately, different speeds for retrieve, different methods of retrieve... and one day I'll catch a fish.  That day will hopefully be because I practiced and stuck with it... that catch will be credited to the slow building process of skill instead of the blind luck of casting a lot...

But I won't be upset if I catch a fish simply because I cast a lot in a season!

Are you fishing from the canoe?  why would private property matter, put in at boat ramp.  Apple tree would be a good bet or maybe Indianola and paddle to Jeff head

Unless you are experience I wouldn't canoe around PNP.

correct me if I am wrong. but I have seen alot of people fishing from the bank at pnp.  why couldnt you do that?  I would rather do that then fish from a canoe there.

I was fishing from the bank at PNP.  I'm a pretty experienced canoe guy but my father in law is not.  He has now returned home to TN.  I could see me fishing the Apple Tree area from the canoe, but not PNP. 

Because my Father in Law is not comfortable in the Canoe, we did not take it out at all.  We did have a great time standing on the "beach" at PNP and casting.  Really nice being out there in the early  morning.

correct me if I am wrong. but I have seen alot of people fishing from the bank at pnp.  why couldnt you do that?  I would rather do that then fish from a canoe there. 

Back in the 80's I filled plenty of punch cards fishing from shore (actually wading out on the point bar) and casting a Kastmaster or Buzz Bomb over the drop.
This can be very productive, especially with silvers.

We crab there alot, Ill open up a map for you guys and see If I cant find the exact location/address for ya Really gorgeous out there. People were using herring jigs and pulling up pile perch 2-6 at a time in like 10 second jigs.
Two Vietnamese ladies left with 4 buckets full in about an hour and 1/2. Caught a few rockfish along the jetty on accident with shrimp, lots and lots and lots of pile perch and bullhead out there, Dropped the gopro with the crabrings and got some good footage. Been to lazy to edit. We were  just out there last weekend.

From Port Angeles / Olympic Peninsula Points: Drive EAST on U.S. 101 to State Route (SR) 104, crossing the Hood Canal Floating Bridge. Continue EAST on SR 104 for 8 more miles (through Port Gamble) to the Kingston Ferry Terminal.

Pile Perch??  Are those any good?  I'll have to check that out.  Looking for something to go fishing for Saturday Morning.  I cannot be more than 45 minutes (or so) from the Chico area this weekend though because of work.

Do Pile Perch go by any other names?
