Never really needed a reason for cured bait for sturgeon. I've been know to use yarn with any various scent to catch them

You can pickle the squid. Never needed to pickle the smelt.

how do you do that?

Ran out of bait one night last winter and was on a good bite with no money to buy more bait. So I just took some pink yarn and tied a Snell knot and put about a golf ball size ball of yarn on the hook. Soaked it with krill, herring, and sand shrimp scent. Ended up catching 2 undersized and breaking off a bigger one. Fishing your local sturgeon river
