Remington 788 Scout?
« on: May 21, 2013, 12:28:05 PM »
Hey guy another odd question for ya. I have an old 788 in 243, I don't really use it anymore since I have since "upgrade" my rifles. I don't want to sell it, my dad bought it for me from my step grandfather and I killed my first buck with it so it has some sentimental value. But I would like to maybe turn it into something maybe more useful. I thought about getting a .308 barrel for it (.308 being more common and powerful) and putting a long eye relief scout scope on it (the 788s have problems with ejecting spent cases into standard placed scopes and bouncing them back into the chamber). So now I have to find a 788 barrel somewhere and then find a gunsmith in SW Washington that can do the work, or maybe have a barrel made? any thoughts?

You should be able to buy a 308 barrel for your 788 from Numrich Arms (GunParts.com) I have three of them Remington 788s in 243, 308 and 7mm08. They are nice guns, I've killed a pile of deer with the 243. If Numrich doesn't have a barrel I can look around and see if I can find one for you.

You can probably get a barrel from any barrel maker. If you just want a short barrel, find me a 308 barrel that's 22" long and I'll let you have the 18" barrel on mine.

Send it to Pac-Nor in Oregon, they will do it all. They have built several rifles for me over the years and re barreled some others.

Years ago i picked up a 788 in .30-.30 caliber.  Bought a synthetic stock, 3x9 scope!  Bought a couple extra clips off ebay!   Most accurate gun i own!  Drives tacs at 100 yds!   Love it!
