any Wirehaired pointing griffon breeders in WA?
« on: July 04, 2013, 07:36:22 PM »
I think I'm finally ready get a dog. I've been threatening to do it for a while but I just never took the plunge. We've had 2 Craigs List dogs in the past which didn't work out. The first one was a Pomoodle (Baby) which died of a heart condition after 2 years. The other was a Cocker Spaniel (Daisy) who ended up with glaucoma by the time she was 18 months and she lost sight in one eye because of it.  She became aggressive after that and started biting the kids, so she found a new home with an older couple where she still is today.

Both of those were my wife's choices of dogs and they just didn't match the activity level of the two kids (9 and 11 now). So this time I'm choosing the breed. I think I've decided on a wirehaired pointing griffon unless somebody can talk me out of it. Now I just need to find a reputable breeder. I found Skeeter Holler Farm, and J&D Griffons. Are there any others out there?

You won't find a better dog....both for hunting and for the family.

Good luck and make sure to post pics.

Go to ifish, the hunting forum, and get a hold of DogZilla. Don't think he has any but he's the guy I would talk to about them.

I will see if I can find a new pic of her.

Updated with a more recent pic.  My daughter and her best pal Daisey.

My girlfriend got an ugly dog just a couple of mths ago. (He's chilling in the shade with my brittany).
She got hers from a breeder in SW Idaho. But I believe she'd spoken with a breeder in WA (maybe Oregon) who had a really good reputation. Turned out the breeder wouldn't let a pup go to her because doesn't hunt (I Know! Why get a dog born to hunt when you don't hunt?!?!)
I'll ask her who she spoke to.

Talk to Carol Ptak (360) 736-0674 at Gryphon Ranch out in Lincoln Cr. She's a little intense, but she knows her ugly dogs. Congrats on the decision.

I've now had a few emails back and forth with Carol and she is incredibly knowledgeable about this breed. I'm going to try and get out there to meet and talk to her in the near future. Doesn't look like there are any pups available right now though.

You might be able to meet her at a hunt test in the area.  Fall City has one coming up in a couple weeks.

If your still looking for a breeder, I have friends that live in Centralia with a litter ready for pickup around labor day. They are very knowledgeable about the breed and active within the http://www.pnwnavhda.com/. Sent you a PM with my number.

Another option to consider is a rescue Griffon. I just received this from my GF who had been looking for a Griffon also (Hers is now 12 weeks old, and what a pain! :chuckle:)

Just received this. -it breaks my heart to think of someone just surrendering their pet and walking away.

I am a facilitator with AWPGA Rescue.

We just got word of an 8 mo. old female Griff that was surrendered to this shelter. She has always been an outside dog (which is not that long). She has no microchip and we have no breeder information. Since you live in driving distance I thought I would send you the information. I am going to also send it to the applicant list that I have for AWPGA Rescue.

John and Laurie Kohnke in Centralia.

John is a master NAVHDA judge and as a hunting guide he puts a lot of days in with his Griffons over birds. He knows bird dogs. He and Laurie are also two of the nicest folks to chat with.

When I was looking to get my Griff they were at the top of my list along with Frank Puccio of Hun Hills Kennels in ID and also Katie ? of Newtown Kennels in N CA.    Quite a few good kennels out there, just find one that raises bird dogs. The PNW NAVHDA is a good place to start.

They are truly awesome dogs. My girl, Catfish, is just over a year and I couldn't have asked for a better dog. She goes to work with me everyday, loves everybody, barks like a dog oughta when somebody walks up on the truck and earned a Prize 1 at her NA hunt test in May. She is a swimming fool, points well and, well.......she flat rocks!

I'd be happy to chat with ya if you like.

Good luck!

I absolutely 2nd John and Laurie if you want a dog from a strong bloodline, a dog less likely to have health problems, and you want to work with someone with rock solid values.

Now if you want a dog that hunts as well and looks much better, then consider a Small Munsterlander.   :)
