I have thought about a steripen, but if you have any dirt in your water u need to filter it
It comes with a pre filter.

I have had both over the years and use a MSR now and like it very much.  I can pump out of a mud puddle and still have drinkable water.

I've tried a lot of different options over the years from the hyperflow, to a sawyer, to tablets, to other pumps.

I really like platypus gravity filter.  I know I differ from the bunch, but I'm a big fan.  I fill up a bag with 4 liters.  Hang it in a tree and come back after a few casts and have 4 liters of filtered water ready.

I use a katadyn, the Hiker Pro to be exact. It is only 70 bucks, and it pumps reasonably fast. It is kind of heavy, but its lighter than carrying water!!!!
Me too.

Pur, bought it in 1990 replaced the filter once.  I know it works great...ran into H20 snag and purified the only option I had...a 3" deep mud puddle high up in the Shenandoah National Park.  Water was the color of creamed coffee and was crystal coming out.
