Big Cougar
« on: August 15, 2007, 06:29:06 AM »
My hunting partner and his step-son went out last night looking for a bear. My partner Chad got out of the truck and walked to a cliff to glass below. Donny (the boy) was still getting his gear together at the truck. He started hissing to Chad and pointing into the brush. Chad could not see what he was pointing at but Donny raised his gun and said he was going to shoot "it". After the shot Chad ran up to him and saw something flopping around in the brush.
He went in and found a HUGE cougar. Donny said he heard it hiss at him. He looked up to see it looking right at him at 15 yards. It stood its ground hissing at him. He shot it right under the chin. He said it was about 180 lbs. I saw it after it was gutted. It was enormous, although it was a female. But a really large one. I would say probably 160 lbs though. He could not pick it up off the ground. They took some photos. I will try to post them if I can get them.

It was taken in the Peaches Ridge area.

Wow, congrats to your buddy, and he helped save some elk for hunting season too!
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

Holy crap! I hope I run into one of those while I'm over there scouting and elk hunting in sept. My father in law hunts over there a lot and has seen many cats while deer, elk hunting.

Congrats. Are you going to ge it mounted?

I really do not believe that, that cat is a female....I make this statement because I dont think there has ever been a documented female cougar harvested in this state, or even in the country that weighed that much.  The picture looks like a male cougar, but hard to tell by just looks.  I'm saying its a male just based on the weight of what they say it is.  Maybe they just guessed the weight at that much and it really only weighed 110 pounds.  Females dont really get to be more than 90-110 lbs tops.  180 pounds or even 160 lbs is a huge cougar and would be a male.

I'd have to agree Cougeyes.
I just chalked it up to one nice putty cat.  180 pounds is ginormous.  It would be hard to judge just by one pic, size of guy, facial structure of cat and  I haven't field judged many cougs, but always take weights with agrain of salt.  Sort of like the 300 or 400 pound bear. No matter.  Its a
Beautiful trophy and can't wait to see what the finished product is.  I wish I could be as lucky. Thanks for getting th pic and story on here!

Believe it or not folks make mistakes about the sex of cougars all the time since things aren't located in the places folks expect them to be.  Here is a good guide.
