Hunting Montana ?'s
« on: July 13, 2013, 06:49:44 AM »
Can a person buy an over the counter tag for Deer and/or Elk in Montana the same way we can here in Washington? I would appreciate the information if someone could help me out.

At this time Montana has 1,474 non-resident big game combo Deer/Elk lic. left that you can purchase on line. If your just thinking about a non-resident deer lic. they have 756 left.
The last few years they have been taking a long time to sell out , due to the increase in fees and the large winter kill/ blue tongue disease.
If your just looking to fill the freezer the a limited number of (B tags)Doe tags go on sale Aug. 5th  ($75 per tag).

A couple of my friends and I have been thinking about this after I saw the thread last year. I believe then I saw you can purchase up to 3 of these tags per person? I can anyone who has done this hunt verify that and maybe the seasons/areas that are open for this? Drawing my bull tag this year might get in the way of making this happen...
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

So is the $75 dollar tag in addition to a hunting license? I tried looking it up but I honestly was confused by their Regs. Thanks for the information.

On Aug. 5th they will post the B tags (surplus tags) these are doe tags only. You will have to figure out what GMU you want to hunt and see if they are issuing tags for that unit. If I remember correctly you can purchase 3 muley does tags max. (each costing $75.00 each).
If I recall correctly the Whitetail does tags where $75.00 for the first one and then $35.00 after. Again if you get one of these tags you must hunt within it's GMU.
If you have any more question feel free to PM and I will try and help you out.

I forgot to answer you question about the License.
If you decide you just want to hunt Does(B tag) the $75.00 fee includes your tag and License. You may also have to purchase what they call a Hunting Access enhancement Lic. which is a one time annual fee of $10.00.

No Montana is not a over the counter state but due to taking the tags away from the outfitter and the increase in the prices the last 3 years they haven't had enough applicants put in for the draws meaning still having tags left over to purchase them over the counter. Yes you can all so purchase a B-tag witch is a doe tag and depending on what Reagan you plan on hunting depends on how many B-tags they give out. You may all so get land owner tags witch are only good for does and they all so specify whitetail doe or muley doe on them. Your Montana tag is good for any method of hunting that is open its like having the multi season tag here in Washington and for the hunting seasons i believe the rifle season in Montana starts the first Monday after they general spike bull season starts in Washington and runs to the end of November. Montana is a great state to hunt i go over every year for the rifle season for two and a half weeks before thanksgiving. Lots of land to hunt and the farmers are more willing to let you hunt their land then hear in washington cant wait to go back this year.
Whack em and stack em

Thanks for the information guys. My buddy is coming back on leave at the end of November and his dad lives in Montana. Trying to figure out what our options were.
