300 grain Hornady SST's for elk? (Muzzleloader)
« on: July 14, 2013, 08:29:59 PM »
Anybody got any field experience?

they shoot very nicely out of my muzzleloader.   I'm considering switching over to them.

Thanks,

Not impressed with them at all.  I've seen 3 elk shot with them the past 2 seasons and they didn't do the job very quickly  :twocents:

They will kill but they don't expand.  My group flat put them to the test for a season on deer and elk and was extremely disappointed!  I would use power belts over sst's and that is saying something considering my lack of love for that bullet as well.

Spot on.  My exact observation as well.

Wow...........   THANKS ALL.

Looks like I'll punch paper with the rest of them and return to my standby....   the 400 grain Harvester lead hard cast bullet.

Not sure why I wanted to change.....  other than I've been using Harvesters for a lot of years and got the itch.

Again.  THANKS ALL.

This is why I love this site.

300gr Speer Deep curl.  Lethal!  3 cows, 2 spikes, 1 6pt, 1 5pt and half a dozen deer and we have only recovered one bullet.  Perfect expansion and 95%+ weight retention.  Only problem with them is that they are out of stock everywhere just like everything else.

I used to shoot the sst. Very accurate but I found on multiple animals it did not mushroom at all. All pass threw. Check some older post from me and blsum we did testing with milk jugs. We now shoot 290grn tmz

I love them.  Picture of four bullets represent four dead elk.  All of them died within 60 yards.  If you shoot the animal where it needs to be shot any bullet will kill it.  I like these bullets because they shoot so well.  The one on the right was from the non bonded few years back.  Just like anything everybody has their favorite.  Personally I like them and they work.  These were shot using 100 grains of triple 7.
take care,
joe

300gr dead centers or 425gr hornady Great Plains do the trick
