Going to buy a Remington 700, what to check
« on: July 15, 2013, 12:26:21 PM »
I'm planning to buy a new Remington 700 SPS. Anything I should check? The gun is new from the store. I will eventually upgrade the stock and trigger. I figure its a good cheap starting point.

I have a couple and they are shooters just like they are. Only thing I did was lighten the trigger to about 2 1/2 pounds. I wouldn't waste your money on a new stock unless you want it to look cool.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Extractor! My new 700 in 300 Rum was garbage out of the box! Simple fix..

I really like my boyds thumbhole stock I have on another gun. I figured I would throw that on there possibly.

I know they are off sometimes on the holes that are drilled for the scope. Going to check those.

On a 700, there are reports of scope mount drilled off-center, barrels bored off-center.
I have heard of more 700 lemons than any other model.

Had a buddy's gun in 7-08 that had to be sent back to Remington because the bore finish was so bad it wouldn't shoot good. They re-honed it and it's fine now. I would suggest a Timney trigger set at 2 1/2 lbs and it will probably shoot pretty good.

Shoot it like it is and see how it does. Since 1962, over 5 million Remington 700 rifles have been sold. No other manufacturer will ever match that number in the rifle department.

Chevy sold 2 million Vegas in one tenth the time.

Buy a Tikka instead.

Only thing I would use a tikka for is a jack bar for my Hi-Lifter jack , doubt it would even be up for that task. Then I would have to wipe myself and the jack down with Lysol to remove the stench after handling it. 👍

To each their own! Fact is, I haven't sold out to the trinket side of the firearm industry.

There is a place for both of them in my life. Win 94 and Rem 700 that is. NOT Tikka
