Drew 2nd deer Spokane North-Muzzy season
« on: June 21, 2013, 08:30:29 AM »
This is my second year putting in for tags here in Washington, and got a 2nd deer tag for the North Spokane 1385 area.  Last year was a bust for my brother and I (We are both originally from Texas, ranch-raised and respectable).  Oh we went to a few public land spots, but it was just not to be.

So this year we decided to try the Muzzleloading season, I have hunted with a front stuffer a few times back on the old ranch, he has never hunted with one, but I sort of got him interested in the whole deal. So now we have a collection of a few rifles each and have been hitting the range with them.  I have read some great suggestions on here on how to prep for hunting with a muzzle loader out this away and I tip my hat to Sabotloader and the many others here who have posted some fine and useful information on this site.

Which leads me to my original inspiration for posting here (sorry to meander about, guess it is a Southern thang). We were wanting to know where would be a good location for deer hunting with a muzzleloader in the North Spokane area and Eastern Washington in general?  We are not looking for a trophy buck (though would not turn one down), but more along the lines of venison to put in the freezer and/or make jerky out of.  As I mentioned earlier, as we were raised on a ranch, we know that if a gate is open or closed, it is for a reason, so leave it that way.  What we pack in, we pack out.  Roads are there for a reason also, so stay on them.  Don't shoot towards the house or cattle, the usual stuff.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, have a great day and be careful out there.

I'm not sure exactly which GMUs are included in the 1050 area or where you'll be hunting but Mt. Spokane holds some really nice dear on the backside and lots of timber land.  Other areas in NE Washington that I'd recommend, if your draw allows you to hunt those areas, would be:

North of Newport, towards Metaline, both sides of the river.  Keep in mind that each side of the river is a different GMU and have different rules.  As an example, 117 is 4pt minimum for Modern while 118 is any buck...
2013 Hoyt Carbon Element G3 28"DL/60-70lb DW Purchased new, 4/26/2014
Fuse Carbon Interceptor 7 pin sight
Hoyt/QAD HD Fall Away Rest
TightSpot Quiver
GT XT Hunter @ 440 Gr. Total Weight
100 grain Muzzy 3 blade and/or 100 grain Magnus Snuffer SS Broadheads

Thanks for the reply Sid.

Guess we are just going to poke around in areas that we have the 2nd deer tags for and see what we can scrounge up.  Last year, we went to an area that previously had been a good hunting area, only to find nothing.  We learned later on that a cougar had moved into the area and there were reports of missing pets and such.  We decided that the cat had also scared off the deer as well.

108 is any buck

As far as North Spokane, it'd be worth it to get permission from at least one land owner.  The public land gets raked over.  I know it's just a 2nd deer tag but still.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Check out Hwy 20 east of Colville on the north side of the hwy.  You will find good area non the less.  Not sure if it is in your area however.
It's a TIKKA thing..., you may not understand.

Yeah Jonathan_S, we are thinking of knocking on doors and see if anyone would not mind getting a deer out of their berry patch/ garden/ orchard on a permanent basis.  ;)

Thanks Dsubame, will check that out as well.  If nothing else, it is one more area to scout out.

I have the 2nd deer for the Spokane North muzzy season as well.  If you are going to hunt the Spokane Gmu (124) I suggest getting a LC Sportsman's map for the GMU and then make it and the Spokane County Tax Assessor's website your best friends.  I hunt this late season when I hunt modern and have not had issues locating public land to hunt.
