tanning deer hides? anyone do it
« on: July 17, 2013, 09:09:34 AM »
This year I am thinking about testing my luck at tanning deer hides. I will have the time to do it carefully but what I lack in is a solid Tanning recipe. Does anyone have a "home meathod" that works also any photos to go along???

I have been contemplating using 1lb. Alum ($10 amazon) 2 1/2 lbs. non iodized salt Neat's-foot oil ($10 amazon) I have done alot of research on it and it seems to work but I also hear it is a out dated meathod. So has anyone tried this meathod? if it worked back then it should work now is my thought! :dunno:

When tanning, you pay to be lazy.  If that make sense?

I haven't tried but I have this book and it has a few different recipes for tanning. It has various recipes for chrome, alum, and vegetable tans. Bought it late last winter and thought if I get any coyotes this summer, I would test some out before I tried on any fur worth anything.

Their fur isn't worth as much in the Summer, and wanted to test before I did one in the fall/winter when the fur is actually worth something.

i dont know if this help but the indians i beleive used the ash froma fire as their tanning solution, they mixed it with water and soaked the hide in it, idk how they got the hair off and made it soft though, looks like a ton of work unless you have a big tumbler
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

Human urine and then chewing it...in that order, was also a popular method I think.

do a search on brain tanning

Plenty of You Tube videos on brain tanning. I think the book I recommended talks about the Indians urinating on the hide to tan. But could of read that somewhere else.
