7mm Rem Mag loads4"
« on: July 18, 2013, 06:33:58 PM »
I know there is lots of info on here about this, and I will search for it, but I'm looking for what peoples most consistent loads are. I am searching for my Dad as his gun won't group with the loads I use.

My preferred load is : 63 gr IMR4831 w/ 154 gr Hornaday Interbond. 1" or less groups at 100.

His gun with these loads is closer to a 4" group.

I've considered the head space may be an issue, as his gun is quite a bit older and more used than mine.

Any thoughts?

I love my Rem. 7mm mag.  I shoot 180gr. Berger hunting vld, 66gr. IMR 7828, CCI 250 primer, o.a.l. 3.415 inch.  Very accurate for my rifle.

175gr Nosler Partitions.
IMR 4350.  Can't remember specifically the load charge without looking it up but I know it's .3 over the recommended max charge in the Nosler manual.
CCI 250's.
A mix of Remington and Federal brass, no real difference.
I am also oal 3.415.
Perfectly happy with this load for both my M77 and my Tikka.  Both guns are sub 1.5" at 200 yds, assuming the trigger puller is having a good day.
Have been shooting this very same load for going on 30 years now thru the M77.

Headspace rarely changes unless you've removed the barrel..  Headspace problem show up as head separation.

How does your dads rifle shoot with factory ammo?  If good that pretty much rules out bedding issues.

I'd start by working up loads for it just like a new rifle.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I would suggest measuring the distance of the ogive to the lands.  Work up some loads from there.  I just finished working up loads for my Sendero 7MM this am.  Here is what I did.  I started at .040 off the lands.  I loaded up four rounds each of .040, .050, .060, and .070.  Find out which seating depth your rifle likes best.  The Sendero likes .060 off the lands the best. See attached pics.. When you work up your loads keep the powder charge the same so you get an accurate measure of each of the four different seating depths.  I use four rounds at each depth as I usually have a "flyer" that I pull left or right. My .22-250 likes .050 the best and my Winchester likes .055 the best.

I live close by and have some shoulder measuring tools if you would like to check head space. I would start with some foam copper cleaner, that is usually the problem with older guns. I also have the tools to check seating depth for a 7mm mag if you are looking for that info. The best part in I am a member of MRC and its 5 min away. Load ammo and shoot.
Just give me a shout.

Same for me. 60.5 grains at 2900 FPS. My OAL is 3.21. I know its a little slow but it paints clover leafs. I dont buy into the faster the better.

What I like about my load it that I can pick up an off the shelf box of Federal Premium with 160 Accubon and they shoot the same. Same OAL, Same FPS, Same results. At any time I can just buy a box if needed.  :twocents:

speed them up or slow them down to the best group, then fine tune with COL....  Im guessing this load was not worked up for this specific rifle.

Our 7's are running 140gr Barnes TTSX over R22 going almost 3400fps

What kind of speed are you getting?  I just tried this load last week and was dissapointed with the speed.  Only got 2600.  I have some factory loaded 168's that are flyin 2940 which is where my rifle is zeroed, so I need to find another 250 fps, but I'm not a fan of compressed loads.  Trying some 4350 this weeks.
