Drawing and area to hunt.
« on: July 21, 2013, 09:17:49 AM »
I have been reading posts on here about people "Drawing" an area to hunt.  Although I have heard of this in the past, I really don't understand the process. Can someone please explain this to me?

Welcome to HuntWa.

If you haven't already, grab a copy of the regs.  The area's that most people are talking about are either the Game Management Unit's (GMU) or what is called a Deer or Elk area, and they are all listed in the regs along with descriptions of the boundaries.

There are several special permit options for different areas.  These offer anything from a chance at an antlerless animal to opportunity to hunt an area that is not open to over the counter tag holders, or an early or later than normal chance to hunt in addition to the general season, to an additional animal, ie, second deer tag/permit.

All of the draws for this year have been done but now is a great time to pick up the regulations and start studying for next year. They're special applications that you apply for early in the year. This year it was April 22-May22 as the deadline. They cost about $6.50 apiece and can get kind of spendy when you start adding them up. If you draw it usually doesn't cost any more unless you draw the once in a lifetime tags (OIL) for moose, sheep, or goat. You build up points every year that you're not drawn so it's supposed to help your odds for future drawings, although sometimes it doesn't seem to work that way. I guess that's why they call it gambling. Welcome to the site and keep asking questions. There's a ton of people with a ton of info (and opinions, hehe) on this site that will definitely be glad to help you out. Good luck!
