h&r 357mag singleshot rifle?
« on: October 20, 2008, 12:22:57 PM »
im looking at getting a new rifle just for brush and im really liking the H&R handi rifle in 357. its light, single shot, and just different. most shots are under 50yds and i can shoot 200gr bullets out of a 20" barrel. and when i just wanna play around i can shoot 38spl.

so 357 is legal for deer and i know guys who hunt with that caliber and 8" revolvers with good results.

so out of a 20" barrel wouldnt the balistics be better?

i can also get the same gun in 44mag. BUT would rather have the 357mag

what do you guys think?

Sounds like a sweet setup.  As long as you understand the limitations of the weapon and use the right ammo it should be more than adequate for deer.  You will get slightly better ballistics from a 20” barrel (compared to a pistol) but the biggest advantages are the longer site radius and added support of shoulder firing.

yeah for $200 and able to throw a 20g barrel on it you cant beat it. and 200gr out of a 357 at close range (under 50yds) is far more then enough for any deer im gonna be shooting.

only problem is that i cant find a cheap 2x scope with normal eye relief.

You might want to try a red dot.

also getting a peep mounted would be sweet.

I believe the shop guy is wrong.  A red dot would be illegal for a muzzleloader but for a modern rifle it isn’t.  Lasers are illegal, but red dots do not project a beam onto the target.

that would mean you could use a battery powered illuminated scope, which is not legal as far as i know.

i could be wrong.

There's nothing in the regs that say no illuminated scopes. No night vision or laser sights. Not including laser rangefinders.

so that much be just for muzzleloader and archery that we cant have electronics.

im gonna pick the gun up on the 1st when i get paid. and gonna have a peep sight mounted. i think taht would be a much better option then having a scope on it. and im gonna go with a 44mag i think.

They also chamber that for the 500 S&W. Might be something to consider.

true but they are ALOT heavier then the 357 and 44.

i really like the 500 though but if i was gonna get a single shot 500 it would be a tc pro hunter with 20" fluted barrel and peep sight.

I have a Marlin 1894C lever gun in the 357mag. 18.5" barrel  and shooting Federal American Eagle 158gr. soft point ammo. Chronographed them at 1835fps. Chronographed same load out of a Smith and Wesson 686 6" revolver at 1330fps. I have the Ashley Ghost Ring sight on the lever gun and love it. Also have the Scout scope mount on the gun. Have a Leupold 2x eer scope with Warn quick detach rings. Have taken ground squirrels with this gun. It is a nice low recoiling packing gun. The factory loads are cheap enough for me and only have 4fps. devation between shots.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.
