I think I will get her a .243 because she's kind of a weenie about recoil and rifle weight and him I think I will get him a .270 or 30-06, haven't decided yet. Either one, I don't want to get all exotic or expensive.

Go for it.  Although a .308 with a muzzle brake will not kick much more than a .243 and will work on elk as well.  Don't get the guns engraved or anything though as that would reduce resale value if that is an issue.

Good point on the engraving. The idea of engraving was a thought, but then I remembered watching a TV episode of someone trying to sell a gun with their name engraved on it and the buyer didn't want because of that... can't remember what show it was. Either way, no go with engraving.

I think that everytime a person on this site gets married they should buy ME a rifle. I will hold it, clean it, shoot it, and store it. That is all.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

As long as it is not a Smossy wedding I don't see a problem.  Then again the squaw and I wanted a "No Gift" wedding and friends and family found that idea offensive.  So what do I know  :dunno:

Have a friend who had the same thing happen - people were giving him crap because he didn't want them to buy him a toaster.  He's not the kind to beat around the bush, so he ended up sending out an email to the effect of "I have everything I need except this wonderful woman as my wife.  I don't want to be saddled with taking back all of the unnecessary stuff we don't want to the same stores you had to go to buy it from just for the sake of giving you something to buy for me.  Let's all just save our time and money for the important things in life - like the reception."

Go for it.  I gave my wife to be a shotgun for Valentines day once.  But no ammo.  My brothers gave "us" a chainsaw for our wedding.  My wife will be the first one to admit it was the most useful gift we got.

The best wedding gift idea I've heard of . . . they'll always remember it. Definitely 30-06 for him and you might consider 7mm-08 for her, light recoil and more versatile for larger game.

I have a 15 year anniversary coming in August if you want to test your theory first. :-P
