I usually check out the REI Outlet online. They usually have decent deals on their gear at the outlet. I bought my Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag from there. I would also suggest you stop by one of the REI stores and hop in a few to see which ones fit you better...the mummy bags...the hybrid shaped bags...whatever.

First thing I would do is watch craigslist for awhile. There was  a Feathered friends 20* bag not long ago and it was cheep! After that I would bite the bullet and buy a good down bag.Ether F. F. or Western Mountaineering..Its a big chunk of cash but will outlast you

What is your budget?  THe best is going to set you back about $600, if you get a Feathered Friends or similar

I just bought the REI Igneo.  I am REALLY impressed.
http://www.rei.com/product/828489/rei-igneo-sleeping-bag?s_kwcid=TC-13018-11106523703-be-1690484904&ef_id=UZaZGQAABPuXvXf2:20130802154410:s

I picked it up during one of the REI 20% off sales for about 275.

waterproof membrane on the shell, 800 fill down, rated to 19 degrees, and just a scootch over 2 pounds.

I have used it 2x in below freezing temps and been hot in boxers and a t-shirt (and I am ALWAYS cold).

I picked up an 8L ultralight waterproof dry bag and it stuffs perfectly in there (I got the long sized bag since I am 6'4").  I can get the whole bag and all my gear into my pack now.

My cold weather bag is the marmot plasma.  900 down fill rated to 3 degrees.  It stuffs into a 13 Liter dry bag and in the bag weighs in at 2.7 pounds.  I am just as pleased with this bag, but the cost is high and it is so warm that it won't work for most trips.

I'm a big guy....6'3 275....and normal bags does not fit...( or more likely I don't fit normal size). Have nothing but positive reviews on Big Agnes and its integrated sleeping pad....oversize bags, system fits like a glove. I have their down bag with a Gortex cover. Love their products!

I have a big angus that I used for many years.  Bought it for the same reason (6'4")  Great bag.  the only reason I got rid of it was that I found the large foot box would get really cold.  If I moved my feet I would have to warm it up again.  Being I am a restless sleeper I was always moving, so I always had cold feet!

I may not be the best person for a temp gauge though.  Like I said before, I seem to always be cold.  It has not been until I moved to the two down bags I mentioned above that I have actually been warm at night in a sleeping bag!
