Bled, gutted and pack in ice withi. 2minutes of hitting the deck! If you are a little picky about what you keep in the rivers there is nothing wrong with them, but the biggest thing is how they are handled!

I see people every year just throwin them up on the bank or in the bottom of the boat and continuing to fish  :bash: they bite all day....take a few seconds to take care of them and they will be a decent fish for the table assuming it is still chrome and not turning.

we usually can around 75-100, all out of the salt, out of the river ZERO
I eat ALL mine out of the rivers. and all I do is bleed and throw on stringer untill Im done fishing. Never had a problem with the meat turning.
Very rare that I get a bad fish unless its really late in the run.  :dunno:
Ignorance is bliss!  :chuckle:

Go catch them off the beach in the salt with buzz bombs, bleed and put on ice right away and you'll be rewarded with WAY better fish.
There's no ignorance involved, I know all the tricks but I don't see them necessary. Guess I'm not picky. Food is Food. Do what you want.

Insert knife through gills, from one side to the other side of the head, cut straight down through the neck. Then turn the fish over and cut through the neck untill about 50-60% of it is open, then just make sure you make it through the heart arteries, Blood will start to pump and squirt out, that's when you know you hit the spot, Usually want to do it while the hearts still bleeding so it pumps most of the blood out of the meat.

The best way I have found is to give them enough of a whack on the head to stand theirfins up but not enough to kill them, open your cooler cut a gill racer and drop them in on the ice. It makes a nasty mess in the cooler but they bleed out very well and the meat stays very firm.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Just snip the gills with scissors or a knife.  One side is enough, no need for excessive gore.

I see no point in throwing back a fish when Its on its last stretch of life.

How about so it can spawn?

As many as we can catch, just finished the last one a week before season started.  These are out of the salt though, I can't get a river one to come out decently.

I've found the best way to cool them is a couple of frozen 2 liter bottles of water in the cooler and then I add sea water to the cooler.  This way the fish is 100% in contact with the cold rather than just one side on the ice.

Dont think my few fish are going to hurt the millions that come in, being how one fish gives birth to 1000-2000 eggs. Guess we should  stop killing deer, bear, and elk so they can reproduce now to eh?

I need to you and your gal out on the salt. Pinks are real good out there. Bled, iced good food for the table. River fish dont hold a candle to salt fish.

Another couple of weeks and it should be good. I would be more than happy to get you two out to catch some pinks. Will be out tomorrow for a cast for kids event. Should have a good idea of the number of pinks in the sound then.

Wow there...not even close to what CP was getting at. Saying "I see no point in throwing back a fish when Its on its last stretch of life," is not the wisest thing to say. If you catch a king in a river that has few, should you keep it since, "Its on its last stretch of life?"  :dunno:
Now talking about humpies, it would be better to release it then let it get freezer burnt because you have waaaaaay to many in your fridge (not saying you did this, but with all of the possible humpies that one could catch, it could easily happen).
