Western WA Elk Raffle winner :)
« on: July 27, 2013, 09:05:15 PM »
:hello: My husband just got notified he won the western wash elk raffle, we have never hunted for horns more just for meat, Any ideas where he should go for a 360 bull? we can hunt anywhere Western WA as long as there is some type of hunting allowed so all the special permit areas, He can hunt with any weapon, from Sept 1 to Jan 1. We are a little excited!!!  What areas have others hunted for this tag? Loowit???? we have a couple of weeks vacation for archery so we think that will be our time to spend for him a nice wall hanger BULL. WOOT WOO
I am so excited for him!! well and me I will get to see these beautiful animals, normally we hunt packwood area, or up by mt Adams, not as many animals there as I have heard of in the loowit.   Any ANY information will be appreciated! We can't afford a guide, wish we had that kind of money but plain and simple we don't. But are willing to walk our asses off to get a nice Bull.  Thanks ahead of time for information!!

I would not hunt the Loowit with that tag.  Which ever hunt you choose, have fun and enjoy the opportunity

I'd hunt the nooksack or the west goat rocks areas. During the rut of course

360 is going to be a stretch IMO, you might send rafflemule a PM to see if he can hook you up with someone that knows the peninsula area. His buddies have helped auction tag winners in the past and know the west side very well. :twocents:

Lucky! If it were me I would be looking for some help from some people who lived in the county you want to hunt, probably be Skagit and end of September. Also 360 on the wet side could be tough; personally id want some character. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Im shocked to hear people suggest the nooksack for 360+ bulls. Ive seen some nice ones there before and some great ones that are long gone but that is not even in my top 5 places I would go with that tag. Im not trying to stir the pot, im just shocked.

Like 270shooter said, Goat rocks would be a good choice, and I'd bet you'd find a lot of help for the Nooksack unit.  Lots of knowledge from locals up there.

Very cool. It should be an awesome time n matter where you go. Its a great opertunity.

I think people are sugguesting the nooksack because there are some good heavy horned bulls in there with little pressure compared to other areas. Not because you will find the next record bull.

Does the raffle tag holder get access keys to timber land? If not the nooksack would be hard to hunt.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

Congratulations, that is very cool hope to see some good pictures. As far as where to go there are a lot of choices and options I have never been to the nooksack  but have heard a lot of good stuff about this area. I myself would probably stay around goat rock/ mt. adams area mainly because I am more familiar with the area. 360 is a big goal but not out of the realm of possibilities. Good luck excited to hear about your hunt!

Congrats that will be an awesome hunt. Like others have said 360 on the westside is a tall order. One thing to consider is do you want to hunt a true coastal roosevelt (which is the toughest big bull of all to kill) or do you not care about that and just want the best scoring bull you can get and go after a cascade roosevelt? That is what I would first decide and then I could decide where to hunt and its purely personal. Myself I would go for a true coastal bull in the brushy jungle they call home keying on Sept 25-Oct 5 but a realistic trophy bull even with your tag that would be hard to pass up would be 320. Goat rocks or Mt Adams ,bigger bulls and completely different hunt and nothing wrong with that either, like I said personal preference. Good luck and enjoy the hunt and dont let inches get in the way of the experience nwhunter
