Hull identification number question
« on: July 28, 2013, 11:48:20 AM »
Registered the boat.  On the instructions, it says to put a proper - between the sections of the Hull Identification Number.  The example they give is

WN-1234-22

Well, my HIN has way more digits than that

WNZ5416FF252

Where do I put the -'s ?

On the registration, it has that number as the HIN.  It also has the Registration number of WN0254SB which matches the number of digits in the example.  Which do I put on the boat?  If it's the long one, where do I put the -'s ?

The short one seems to have the correct amount of numbers.

If I recall correctly mine was xx-xxxx-xx,  just as the first one you posted,  8 total .

It is the boats license plate number basically, look on your registration it will say license number in a box that is the one to use.

I dont have ID numbers. I don't think its necessary if its under a certain length and is not using a gas moter.

I believe this is the number he is trying to find. Not the HIN#

Use the registration number, not the hull number. The hull number should be stamped or fabricated into or on the hull somewhere.

I BELIEVE if you have mechanical propulsion and operate it in navigable waters it has to be licensed. I did the research quite some time ago so may be s little off.
My boat is Washington licensed but I don't have to display the numbers since its its a Coast Guard documented vessel, I display the document number.

 :yeah:

The HID is basically like the VIN on a car. The registration number is like the license plate number on a car.

Like it says in this document.

Documented vessels
Federal regulations prohibit the display of the WN
registration number on documented vessels.
State registration decals are required and must be displayed
on the forward half of the vessel so they are
easily visible for law enforcement.

But for DoubleJ and most of us regular people you need to display the WN registration number. and in his case it looks like he said it was "WN-0254-SB"

I don't. They don't need to be. I don't have titles or anything for any of our 3 boats. They were either just purchased from craigslist or given to us.
The only thing I plan on putting on anything is an electric trolling moter at the most.

Right off the website it says...

**What to Register**
Any boat or other water vessel that is 16 feet or longer, has a motor larger than 10 horsepower, or is used on federal waters.

**What Not to Register**
Non-motorized canoes.
Non-motorized kayaks.
Non-motorized rowboats.
