I dont have ID numbers. I don't think its necessary if its under a certain length and is not using a gas moter.

Use the registration number, not the hull number. The hull number should be stamped or fabricated into or on the hull somewhere.
The HID is basically like the VIN on a car. The registration number is like the license plate number on a car.

I did the research quite some time ago so may be s little off.My boat is Washington licensed but I don't have to display the numbers since its its a Coast Guard documented vessel, I display the document number.
