Got back in town Sunday night with an empty big bull tag. Hunters were in there thick but not much elk. I saw a rack of a very nice bull in the timber the first sunday morning but was not able to track it down to make a shot. I did a get a little sun burned while I was out there...geesh the weather was warm up there. Thanks to all for your tips and suggestions...sorry I couldn't get the job done and post a pic.

i agree with you to an extent. A lot of luck has to come into play for a guy to get a nice bull but there is a lot of skill that must also come into play. For example when i hunted the archery season i hunted for 4 days and passed up 8 different elk before shooting the one i did. This is all from simply driving around and calling. If the bull sounded big i would go after him. Some bulls took much longer than others to come in. The one i ended up killing took me 6 hours of tracking and calling until his cows bedded down and he got pissed off enough to come kick my ass. From my observations of hunting this area for the past six years its all about how picky someone wants to be and what their skill level is. About 70% of the hunters i saw were just sitting in tree stands or watching a clearing.

Right ok then i should say RIFLE hunting is that way
if it was during the rut things would be different
but they didnt care about my calling and all they wanted to do was bed up all day long in the THICKEST hell hole they could find. trust me i went into a couple of them. :-)
but i do agree to disagree with you.
its just a ton of luck during modern.

I spent quite a bit of time on the North face of bald mountain and in the thick up at Raven's Roost and the comments were all the same from those that hunted modern deer season up there..."the elk were here during deer season". If calling works so well during bow then why not use it during modern...that's because you'll have evey pumpkin patch of people hunting you down. I agree that modern is more luck than anything but you do need to know where they go to hide and I guess I still have that to learn. Hopefully late deer season will be successful.
