Got an update from Fanatic last night. Not much action yet, bulls are pretty quiet but he did get into a couple vocal bulls last night. Got under 100 yards on them. They were talking the whole time. The wind swirled and the bugles got further and further away.
Close but no cigar.

I came home last night after spending 4 days hunting with him.  The bulls are mostly quiet. We had a bull bugling Sunday morning but on our way towards him we ran into another hunter with a bull permit who was already chasing him so we backed out. Sunday night called in a bull down in a hole that came to about 20-30 yards but wouldn't come out of the thick stuff. We knew it was a bull but no idea how big.  That bull came in silent but the cows were chirping at my calls. We never saw him, wind swirled and he walked away calmly.  We backed out and went back in Monday night but couldn't turn them up. MOnday night we had 4 bulls bugling around camp in the dark. That was the biggest rut show we'd seen or heard. We were into elk again Tuesday morning. Snuck in on 2 elk that ended up being a trophy spike with 30" spikes and a 1x2 that was probably 3' long. Dennis was drawn on the spike at 40 yards, he stopped quartered away, Dennis put the pins on him, settled in and ...........
Let down and let him walk. We were on our way back to the Jeep to top off our water and head for another canyon and those 2 spikes were 300 yards from the Jeep. On day 8 for him, I'm not going to lie, I think he had some 2nd thoughts. I did too.
I think he's going to stay up there till Friday so he can make it home to see his family before they take off for Pennsylvania.

So I'm back.....for now. I came home yesterday night to spend some time with my family before they went back east. They leave tomorrow morning, so I'm going hunting again after they leave. That will give me Saturday night, and all day Sunday to try and finish the deal.
It's been a tough 11 days. Terrible thunder storms followed by sweltering heat. I've been into elk most days, and as jakelope said, could have ended it on a spike, or on a cow on a couple of occasions. I had a couple bulls talking above my camp the first couple days, and tried to get on them but never did.  The wind would always mess me up, or they wouldn't come in.
On the third or fourth day, I got into a canyon with 3 bulls talking and I went for the lower bull. I was easing through the thick stuff and saw the legs of elk coming by. I quickly set up in a shooting lane and waited as the first couple cows filtered by at about 15yds. I was waiting for the bull when one of the cows took a different route and we ended up face to face at like 8 yds. We had a stare down for what seemed like forever, and she eventually busted.
The highlight was Thursday morning when I had what should have been a season ending encounter with a bull I had on one of my cams on a regular basis. The g4 bull. I was working the timber real slow right at first light, when I heard a snap up to my left. I stopped and listened. Another snap. I dropped to my knees and saw legs. Then horn. I knocked an arrow and waited. He moved into an opening where I could see the sweet spot. Right as I start to shoot, I second guess my yardage estimate so I get a range.  He moves. No shot. I wait for him to get clear again. When he does, I draw. Right as I get to full draw, there is a click noise. I think it was my call hitting my binos. The bull hits the afterburner. He's gone. Heartbreaker.
It was nice to get to 40 yds of this bull and draw on him, but I would have liked to let that arrow fly.
Anyway, that's my season so far. I've got two days left, hopefully I can get it done. Here are some pics of the bull hard horned. He's a good bull. Forever burned into my memories.

He didn't go far.  He's still lurking.  You didn't give him enough reason to blow out of there.  :)

Here's what I can tell you. Fanatic has worked his a$$ off for this and I know that he'll pull it off at the buzzer. He could have ended his season twice when I was there but didn't because he wants a big bull and didn't want to settle for less. If he doesn't kill a bull, it's not for a lack of trying. 11 straight days of awake at 4:30am and out hunting wears a guy out. I now feel like I understand the pressure that these special permits can put on a person a little better. I'm happy that I got to be a part of it, if only for a few days. We hung out in some beautiful country and experienced some stuff a lot of folks don't get to.  Go get em brother.

Fanatic, I don't believe in luck, so sending a prayer that the good Lord will bless you with a dandy bull.
