Camper Heater - Hydro Flame- not heating
« on: August 04, 2013, 10:00:20 AM »
I have an older camper I have to use for upcoming hunting season.  The heater isn't working.  It comes on and blows air but never ignites.  I pulled the cover off and looked at all connections and everything seems to be in place and the fuses are all fine.  I checked the igniter and it looks fine.  My next check will be to unplug the board and have it tested.  Anyone else have other suggestions to try?  Heck, anyone who is an RV guy that wants to earn a few bucks can come fix it.

Replacing the whole units seems a waste since all the parts are easy to replace and the new ones are 500-700 dollars.

What about a buddy heater? I think they're safe for indoors  :dunno:

In a pinch it would work but I want to fix the real heater.  They are more convenient and out of the way.

Mine was doing the same thing and I found that the propane line was clogged.  I cleaned out the line an the heater works just fine now.

I had same issue on mine a few years ago.  There is a panel on side of furnace that contains the elect.  Pull the cover off of it and you may find a fuse 5amp I think, it will be blown.  Replaced mine once and it lasted a month.  I pulled fuse holder out of enclosed panel so I could access it easier next time.  I put in a 20amp fuse and it worked forever great! :chuckle:

Had the same problem on one that is a 2002 model.  The circuit board was fried.  It was about a $200 fix.  The RV guy said that one of the problems is that people let water go down the exhaust tube.  Don't know why that would fry the board but it works now.

Ya. and they have redundant safety features.  Google and learn em and then test em one by one.  Could be one is not working properly or was knocked around a bit and out of whack?

Is your battery fully charged ?   My heater gives that exact symptoms when the battery voltage gets down a little. Blows cold but no heat.  After that I would try a board.  Is it clicking & trying ?   Good luck.

Second on the lines for clogs.  Seems this was an issue here before, and my uncle had clogged lines as well. Seems spiders like the additive in propane or something. Google or YouTube it.

Perhaps something to look at is the heat exchanger is full of scale and rust. Propane is full of moisture. I have had to remove the exchanger and shake the rust out of it so the tubes aren't plugged up.

I had Evergreen RV test my control board and it was fried.  Got a new one and hopefully it will work!

Your furnice is not working because it sounds like the igniter is not working.  Usually there is only two small nuts that holds the igniter and burn plate in place. You will have to service this, it is very easy to do. The igniter and the burner plate will come out of the furnice by pulling the to sheat screws. The igniter plate has a little screen on it, it plugs up in time from rusty dust and particals. Clean the screen and the propane will get through the screen and ignite.  If you get on the PC and google the part number and name and model you can get this information about your furnice and how to service it.  If you take it to a RV place they will charge you over a 100 dollars an hour.           Good luck. :)
