Help with Remington 700.

Got my brother a Remington 700 in 300WM a few month ago. It has a bipod on it, and nothing else. I want to get him a scope rail, rings and a scope. I want him out hunting with me, and for semi long range shooting.

I was thinking a one piece 20MOA rail. But what brand? Heard the holes drilled on the Rem 700s don't always line up?? Not sure if true.

I have Burris rings in my parts pile, are they good enough?

For the scope I want to stay within roughly $500. Would like to be able to get out to 500-700 yards with it. I was thinking something in the neighborhood of 4-16x50.  With a BDR  or mil dot reticle, and turrets for dialing out to said range. Am I asking for too much in this price?

What do you guys suggest, and what else do I need to consider getting for him?

I have a couple of EGW rails on Rem 700's and have never had any trouble with the fit.  I recently picked up a Blackhawk rail at Cabelas. It fit fine and have been to the range with it with no problems.
I have a couple of Bushnell Elite Tactical 5-15 and they have performed real well.  They are right at your price point.   Good luck

How's the repeatability on those bushnell Elite's? I would mess with one of those before I would ever look Vortex's way.

Add another 200 and get a zeiss, you wont regret it. You can send the scipe to Zeiss and the will change out the turrets for you. Turrets work better than the bdc crap and you keep your field of view clear. If your going with turrets get a good quality scope because a lot of the cheaper ones dont track.

Probably one of the best bases I have found out there are the Weaver Tactical series... As with any full length picatinny base, make sure that it is totally flush to the receiver... If not go to youtube and look up bedding a scope rail.  There are also videos on how to check it for fit as well.  It is a very easy process, and will help prevent you from tweaking the scope, and it will ensure that everything is stress free.  Really you can spend $150+ on a scope rail that has NASA space shuttle tolerances... But in the end its only as accurate as the receiver it is mounted too, and Remington receivers can be hit or miss.  I have 3 of them, two needed bedding and one did not, and all have Weaver Tactical bases.  But I will say, all three are totally stress free mounts with about an hour and some epoxy.

For a scope, you cannot go wrong with Vortex.  I have a Crossfire II 4-12x40 AO BDC.  While its not a $500 scope, it holds zero, is great clear glass and it has the Vortex warranty.  I ended up $189 for mine out the door.  Mine is on my coyote rig,  so I wasn't looking for something like a SFP.  Also, look into the HS-T series... They are 4-16x44 SFP, 30MM tube and are supposed to be a downright awesome scope for the money at ~$550... There is also the HS series if FFP is more of what you are looking for.  They run about the same price in the end for similar magnification.

Burris makes good rings, just make sure you mount everything properly.  The more precise, and stress free all your mounting is, the more consistent the rifle will be in the long run.  Also, unless you happen to have one of the awesome x-mark triggers... You might want to look into a trigger.  I never put much thought into triggers until I got a timney for my long range rig.  Now I own 5 timney triggers for all my rifles.  For ~$150 for a Rem 700 timney trigger, it will make a huge difference in group sizes. 

And, as others have said... Ammo and range time... You can have all the most expensive stuff in the world, but if you aren't using it and practicing with good habits its all pretty much a waste of money.  I would much rather have cheaper equipment or "garbage" as some people will call it, but have more money for range time and ammo than I would a $9000 rig and be so broke I can't shoot it. But that is just my

Mine track perfectly and they are very bright.  Mine are on a .338 WM and a .300 WM.  Only bad thing I can say about them is the turrets are high and bulky.  I use Vortex bino's but can't comment on the scopes as I haven't used one.   At that price you oughta give one a try.

Agree with Madhatter on the tactical weavers. My go to base when mounting for a price conscious shooter. Move those 10-1 over any other base. And the Vortex? Awesome glass! Check out the Viper 6.5-20X44. Right in your price range. Have one on a long range 308, and another on my light 300 Ultra. Repeatable and very durable!! Have had 4 of the Elites in varios configurations and can say nothing bad. Both brands have awesome glass for what you are looking for! Good luck!!

I like Warne rings and rails. All steel and not as spendy as Badger and some others. I'd suggest the Vortex Viper HS. I like mine.

Had two vipers both spent more time with UPS and at the Vortex shop for warranty work than they did on the rifle and in the field. Sold them cheap and was done with them. I don't make a living selling them, so my opinion and experiences are non bias , real world. Their repeatability on the turrets was poor to say the least. I imagine the PST's and higher end are better but the first two I had squashed any premise of future Vortex purchases.

Sorry you had a bad experience and you getting a bad scope, Biggerhammer...Thousand of satisfied Vortex owners will attest to their durability and repeatability!  Very satisfied with all the Vortex optics I personally use in the field, and I am not easy on my gear, so they have to stand up to alot of abuse, wether rain soaked brush chasing bears, sub-degree temps after coyoes, or the hot plains of Africa! If you are wanting to get him to 700, you might want to rethink your rifle choice as well.
The Remington is a good rifle, but to be consistent a 700 it helps to start with a custom or semi custom rifle, great optics, Then it's trigger time.
It will also hep to have proper training. I had a student just last week, that had never shot past 300 yards, making first round hits at 800 yards in  variable  winds with his 308.
Optics, I consider Leupold to be entry level, and  Nightforce to be the be all-end all.  Seekins rings and bases, aftermarket trigger.
 Keep him under 400 yards at this point is my suggestion.

yes good glass is always best.  i have a $70.00 NC-Star 4-16x56 on my Rem 700 .300 win mag and get 2 inch groups at 200 yards.  It cost me $150.00 in various ammo brands to get there.  One of the biggest influences on the accuracy of my rifle was ammo.  Some grouped poorly others ok and a couple very good.  I use Remington Scirroco and works very nice.  $57.00-$60.00 a box but I feel confident I would get a good anchoring or instant kill shot on a bear out to 400 yards.  Good luck.  I like mine for hunting very light durable.  My sling broke on my motorcycle and it took several end over end tumbles.  It cracked the rear glass on the scope but no nitrogen leaked out as it doesn't fog up.

I have had good luck with Leupold , glass is clear, and sight picture even out to 500 is jaw dropping.

I had a vortex viper on my gun and the parallax knob got stuck. I sent it in and they sent me back a new viper hs. They bumped me up to a more expensive scope. Can't complain about that.
